Djegja eshte menyra e vetme.

Tre shkrimet e fundit jane fshire nga une. Jo per ti dale ne mbrojte ndonjerit prej jush sepse spo behet lufte dhe as po hame kokat e njeri tjetrit dhe aq me teper kur sejcili ketu eshte i zoti i vetes por thjesht qe te mos mbushet kjo teme kaq interesante me komente pa vend dhe jashte subjektit. Dhe me kete gje te drejtohem me shume ty Genesis. Ka shume anetare qe ne tema te tilla ne vend qe te vleresojne materialin dhe punen e bere, kapen me disa gjera anesore dhe sulmohet burimi i informacionit. Sidomos kur pranohet mungesa e njohurise per temen e hapur.

Asgje personale me asnjerin prej jush, thjesht mbarevajtja dhe zbatimi i rregullores se forumit. Me pak fjale mos 'sulmohet' mesazheri por MESAZHI.

Duket se varri me pare ka patur kete forme
Kjo do te thote qe edhe stema me shqiponje eshte shtese.

Andaj do na duhej ADN nga varret qe lexonin Kastriot (Reposh & Gjon) Duke i Ilirise, per te krahasur me ADN pretendente. Sigurisht, qe kjo eshte kthyer ne ender me djegjen e Hyllenderit. Po ashtu murgjit e Hyllenderit kane perkthyer ne Slavonishten e vjeter gjithe dokumentet origjinale.

Edhe une i ketij mendimi jam.

    INTERVIEW WITH DR. LEON TWAROG
    CONDUCTED BY CHARLOTTE REMENYIK
DATES OF INTERVIEW: NOVEMBER 20 AND 27, 2000
    PLACE: OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES
    _____________________________________
...... The establishment of the Hilander Center, which included the Hilander Research Library and the Research Center for Medieval Slavic Studies, was one of the most significant and long-lasting achievements of Dr. Twarog. Of course many individuals were involved. All told it was “a marvelous combination of cooperation between the Library and the College of Humanities.” The genesis of the project goes back to 1968 when Father Mateja Matejic was hired to teach Russian Literature at Ohio State. He also founded and built the St. Stephen of Dechanic Church, of the Serbian Orthodox Church, in Columbus. Father Matejic learned in 1969 that the great library of the Hilander Monastery at Mt. Athos, Greece, might be in some danger since fires had already occurred in some of the 22 monasteries of Mr. Athos. Some documents had already been lost to fire. The library at Hilander Monastery was so extensive that it virtually constituted a Serbian university. It was where “anybody who was anybody in Serbia studied at some time.” Dr. Twarog arranged for Father Matejic to visit the monastery. He secured an agreement from the monks that Ohio State would be allowed to microfilm their manuscripts. The project was launched in the summer of 1970 when 130 manuscripts were filmed; the following summer Father Matejic returned. This time he was accompanied by his son, Pedrag, who is today the Curator of the Hilander Collection. Thus began the filming of “the largest and last remaining collection of Serbian manuscripts of this kind.” Since the major collection in Belgrade was later destroyed by bombs in the war the Hilander collection became ever more crucial.

Today the collection is used by scholars from all over the world. Finding adequate space in the library to house properly and to utilize the documents was an early challenge. Dr. William Studer, once he became Director of the Ohio State Library, was of great assistance. The first location of the collection was in a renovated broom closet, but more adequate space was soon found. The Serb National Federation of Pittsburgh donated $20,000 to buy microfilm readers. Provost Diether Haenicke, a former Dean of the College of Humanities, arranged for the crucial allocation of $300,000 to renovate and equip the larger space. The success of the entire enterprise depended on close cooperation between the Library and the College of Humanities. The library helps fund the library staff positions, such as the Curator, while the College of Humanities provided money for an Assistant Curator and for Research Assistants. At one point Dr. Micheal Riley, a new Dean of the College of Humanities, and also a Professor of Latin American History (a field excluded from the Area Programs), tried to derail the Hilander project. He sought to strip the Center of all its support from the College of Humanities. “He didn’t want any of this to be part of the College of Humanities. And I hate to say it, but we fought this out, tooth and nail.” (p. 63) Riley was voted down by the Advisory Council for the Hilander Room by a vote of 13-1. Hearing this Provost Haenicke (who had preceded Riley as Dean of the College of Humanities) overruled Dean Riley and confirmed the existence of the customary cooperative arrangements between the Library and the College of Humanities. So it has been ever since.

Despite its success in preserving so much of Serbian culture some in Serbia questioned the purpose of the Hilander Room. There were some in Serbia who labeled it as a “spy nest.” In Bulgaria there appeared a groundless accusation that Father Matejic might have stolen Bulgarian documents even though he had last been in Bulgaria in 1975. Dr. Twarog made reference to the well publicized case of Ohio State Professor Tony Melnikas who had been accused of stealing priceless documents from the Vatican Library and trying to sell them to a book dealer. For this he was sentenced to prison. Perhaps this incident fueled the skepticism of European critics of the Hilander Room. Not only a few Serbians and Bulgarians but also the Greek government was suspicious of the reasons for the library. Once the Greek secret police tried to prevent one of their citizens, a monk, from visiting the library.

Despite the obstacles posed by such as Dean Riley and several European critics the Hilander Project can today only be considered “a tremendous success.” “It’s unique in the world and it is growing.” (p. 66) The collection now houses about 4,000 manuscripts on microfilm. The original microfilms “are stored in a cave” somewhere in Pennsylvania. Every 40 to 50 years the films will need to be re-done because the film deteriorates. The Serbian National Academy also microfilmed many documents but no attention was paid to the care of the films and all were lost through deterioration. “So the only collection of its kind is here. Also, this is the only place where women can come to study the materials. No females.” (p. 66) Indeed in Serbia no females were even allowed in the library building.

Another initiative credited to Dr. Twarog was the establishment of the Paissy Endowed Professorship which only came to Ohio State because Twarog acted decisively at the opportune moment. Father Paissy, a monk at Hilander, had been helpful in the early stages of creating the microfilm library. Another circumstance, purely fortuitous, was that a journalist named Januarious Aloysius McGahan happened to have been born and later buried in 1876 in New Lexington, Ohio. He was the journalist who in 1876 alerted the world to the fact that Turks were slaughtering the Bulgarians. Hence he acquired the name of “Liberator of Bulgaria.” To this day many Bulgarians visit his grave in New Lexington. While on a brief visit to Bulgaria in 1982 Dr. Twarog met with Alexander Fol, the Bulgarian Minister of Education. After learning that the usual annual enrollment for students of the Bulgarian language in the United States was between four and eight students a year, Dr. Fol, after some delicate negotiations, agreed that his government would provide $250,000 for establishment of the Paissy Professorship in Bulgarian. As things turned out the Bulgarian government actually donated only 10% of what they had promised, but it was enough seed money to provide some funds for participants in the summer institutes for the Hilander project, or to send students to Bulgaria. But it was not enough money to fully fund the Professorship. Today Bulgarian is taught at Ohio State but not on a full-time basis

Since his retirement Dr. Twarog has not been actively involved in any new projects at Ohio State. He has been busy writing his memoirs of growing up in New Bedford, Massachusetts in the 1920’s and 1930’s for his children and grandchildren. He continues to serve on the Advisory Council for the Hilander Room. Looking back on his long career at Ohio State Dr. Twarog expressed much satisfaction. He had had opportunities to work full time in higher administration at the university, but chose not to pursue them. He listed his major accomplishments at Ohio State as follows: 1) Building the library collection, including the Hilander Research Library and the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies. 2) Building the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Literatures and the Russian Area Studies Program. 3) Helping to make the University “less provincial” and more “international” and 4) The full development of “individualized instruction in Foreign Languages, “TAMBSPI.” His major disappointment at Ohio State was his inability to achieve the full development of the telephone language program at Ohio State. “So I’m satisfied with what I’ve done. If I had to do it all over again, I would do the same thing.” (p. 77).....
