Socialist Edi Rama Maire of the Albanian capital since October, 2000 but also painter, Edi Rama is at the origin of the transformation(conversion) of Tirana.
Studying to the Academy of Arts at the end of the 80s, he(it) makes a commitment in the first contestings of the Stalinist regime under which his(its) country still lives. Disappointed by the democratic transition led by Sali Berisha and mistreated by the new "democratic" police, he(it) takes refuge then with France, where he lives during some time(weather) in the international City(Estate) of the Arts in Paris.
In 1998, the socialist Prime Minister of time(period), Fatos Nano, suggests him(her) becoming a Minister of the Culture. A post which he(it) will leave in 2000 to become a mayor of Tirana. From his(its) taking office, he(it) engages artists to repaint the grey facades of the buildings of the city center of lively colors.
He(It) also frees(clears) the city of thousands of illegal constructions, kiosks(pavilions) and small workshops which had bloomed(prospered) in the 1990s, restore the green spaces, cleans the river Lana and make transplant about 4 000 new trees. Widely mediatized abroad, his(her,its) action(share) is worth to him(her) numerous enemies in its country.
Victim of two attempts of murder, he(it) not less competed(nevertheless competed) for a second mandate in the head of the capital during the elections of the autumn, 2003.
