BERLIN -- Wednesday Kosovo governor Michael Steiner yesterday added his voice to the Albanian chorus calling for Serbias southern province to become an independent state.
Speaking at Berlins Humboldt University, Steiner called for a new UN Security Council Resolution on the final status of Kosovo, saying it was wrong to think that such status could not be determined for many years.
Using this as a basis, the EU should then take over from the UN and complete the task in a European manner, said the UNMIK chief, adding that the international community was now more interested in the global fight against terrorism than in managing Kosovo.
The governor said that he was sceptical about the ability of Kosovo residents to reach agreement on the final status of the province and that the Kosovo Government was putting strong pressure on international institutions to resolve the issue.
In any case, he said, there was far less readiness to finance the expensive UN administration.
