American fugitive arrested, Fekrim Haxhaj, 27

On Tuesday, May 16, 2007, at approximately 9 a.m., the Toronto Police Fugitive Squad and the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) arrested Fekrim Haxhaj, 27, of Maple.
Authorities in Suffolk County, New York, allege that:
- Haxhaj took part in an assault and subsequent kidnapping in December 2005,
- two victims were assaulted and threatened at gunpoint by two suspects,
- one of the victims was forced into a vehicle and kidnapped,
- the suspects vehicle was stopped by police and the victim was rescued,
- one suspect was arrested at the time and the second suspect made good his escape.
Recently, the Toronto Police Service received information that the second suspect was living in Canada. Investigation led to an address in Maple, Ontario.
Fekrim Haxhaj, 27, of Maple, was arrested a short distance from this address and was turned over to CBSA agents.
He is scheduled to attend an Immigration Hearing in the next 48 hours.
Haxhaj is facing the following charges laid by New York:
1) Kidnapping in the First Degree,
2) Conspiracy in the Second Degree,
3) Assault in the Second Degree,
4) Unlawful Imprisonment in the First Degree.
