Cause Of Manhattan Teen's Sudden Death Remains A Mystery
An autopsy will be conducted on the body of a 13-year-old boy who collapsed and died during gym class at his Upper East Side School Thursday.
The Department of Education says Geni Qehaja of Ridgewood had no history of medical problem and that the cause of his death remains a mystery.
Geni was in gym class at Robert Wagner School when he suddenly passed out. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
In a letter to parents, Wagner Middle School principal Jennifer Rehn said, "Everything possible was done by the school and by EMS," to revive the teen after he collapsed.
The letter goes on to indicate that grief counselors will be on hand to help address students' concerns, saying: "The M.S. 167 faculty, guidance counselors, psychologists, social worker and the Region 9 Crisis Team have met with your children and informed them about this sad news. Please be assured that support has been available and will be provided throughout this difficult time."
Sadly, friends and neighbors say this is the second recent tragedy for the family. Geni's father died a year and a half ago.
