Dr Gëzim Alpion

A Brief Biography

Gëzim Alpion was born in Albania in 1962. He has studied at the Universities of Tirana (1981-83), Cairo (1985-89 and 1990-93) and Durham (1993-97). He was awarded his PhD in 20th century English Studies at the University of Durham in 1997. Since then he has lectured on Film and Media Studies, Anglo-American Studies, Modernism and Creative Writing at the University of Huddersfield, Sheffield Hallam University, Newman College of Higher Education in Birmingham and the University of Birmingham.

Gëzim convenes the first year course ‘Introduction to Media, Culture and Society’ and the third year course ‘Film, Culture and Society’. He teaches on these two modules and on the Masters Programmes in International Communications and Media Studies. Gëzim is Convenor of the Sociology Seminar Series.

Gëzim is a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Research in Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Birmingham. He has been invited to give talks and lectures at several British Universities as well as in Germany, Albania, Kosova and India.

Gëzim is a versatile and prolific academic, writer, playwright, reviewer, journalist, and a media, political and culture analyst. He has contributed articles in several peer-reviewed journals. His features have appeared in The Guardian, The Birmingham Post, The Huddersfield Daily Examiner and The Middle East Times.

Gëzim has been interviewed by ITV (Jonathan Dimbelby Programme), BBC (Religious Affairs Unit, London), Radio France Internationale (RFI, Paris), Deutsche Welle (DW-radio, Bonn), Showtime’s Penn & Teller Show (Los Angeles), Indian State Television Network (Doordarshan – Kolkata), Radio SAGA 105.7fm (Birmingham), RTVSH (Albania), KTV (Kosova), RTV21 (Kosova) and Radio Kosova. He has also been interviewed by and quoted in The Times, The Guardian, The Times Higher Education Supplement, The Birmingham Post, The Evening Mail, The Birmingham News, Sunday Mercury, The Scotsman, Scotland on Sunday, The Times of India, The Hindustan Times, Asian Times, The Sydney Morning Herald, Corriere della Sera, etc.

His collection of essays Foreigner Complex (2002), the play Vouchers (2001) and his talks and lectures have been widely reviewed and publicized in the UK and abroad. Foreigner Complex reveals Gëzim’s fascination for all things Egyptian, inspired by seven years of study at Cairo University. In the hard-hitting tragedy Vouchers, Gëzim tackles the emotive issue of refugees and asylum seekers in Britain. Directed by Serbian-born dramaturg Dr Duška Radosavljević Heaney, the play received its first performed rehearsed reading in the UK at the Festival of Contemporary European Plays in Huddersfield in March 2002. In his new play If Only the Dead Could Listen, Gëzim turns his attention once more to the treatment of asylum seekers in Britain. The play is to be staged at the MAC Theatre in Birmingham on 7th and 8th February 2006 at 19:30 by Dreamscape Productions Company with Marcus Fernando and Duška R. Heaney as artistic directors. The event is sponsored by Arts Council England and the Birmingham and Midland Institute

Gëzim’s new book Mother Teresa, the Media and Sainthood will be published by Routledge in 2006. Gëzim is editor of the Albanian Journal of Politics

Gëzim’s research interests include the Sociology of the Media, Fame and Religion. His current research focuses on ‘political correctness’ in the British Media and British Politics, religious celebrities, media representations of the ‘other’, media censorship and control, political economy of the media and ‘brain drain/gain’.
