Most Popular Wedding Date Ever Is...
...July 7, 2007. That's 7-7-07. The string of lucky sevens combined with the fact that July 7 is a Saturday in 2007 have made this the most popular wedding date for about as long as anyone can remember.
What that means is that churches and reception sites have been booked for months and in some cases as long as two years. Don't even think about trying to get married on July 7 unless you're planning to do it in your parents' backyard. The Associated Press reports that in California alone, thousands of sites are already booked. "It's the most popular date--ever," Tonya Simmons, wedding specialist with Boomtown Casino Hotel on the outskirts of Reno, told AP. Even "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria and her San Antonio Spurs fiancé Tony Parker are getting married on July 7.
The novel date means that those "lucky" brides and grooms will pay full price and then some for just about everything. Richard Markel, head of the 800-member Association for Wedding Professionals International, said the increased demand will drive up costs for everything from caterers to florists.
"The average number of weddings on a Saturday in July is about 12,000. But this year, July 7 (has) more than 30,000 weddings taking place that day," Kathleen Murray, deputy editor of TheKnot.com, a wedding planning Web site, told the Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky. "But I haven't really seen anything as tremendous as this," she added. "I think a lot of couples are superstitious. They are often looking for a little significance behind the date, so when they see 7/7/07, it just pops out and seems lucky."
But why is the number seven considered lucky? For many, the number seven has spiritual significance, representing God's perfection, as well as completion.
Here are some fun facts to know and tell about why seven is so lucky:
For Christians:
Many Christians consider seven to be a perfect number since the Bible places such importance on it. The number six is considered imperfect.
It is the number of the Seven Virtues: Chastity, Moderation, Liberality, Charity, Meekness, Zeal, and Humility, corresponding to the seven deadly sins.
For Roman Catholics and many reformed traditions, there are seven sacraments.
In the Gospel of Matthew 18:21, Jesus tells Peter to forgive seventy times seven times.
In the genealogy recited in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus is 77th in a direct line.
For Jews:
Seven is very symbolic in the Torah, denoting the infusion of spirituality and Godliness into the Creation. For example: God rested on and sanctified the seventh day.
The menorah is a seven-branched candelabrum.
During a Jewish wedding ceremony, seven blessings are recited under the chuppah.
After the wedding, a Jewish bride and groom are treated to seven days of festive meals. This is call the Sheva Berachot ("Seven Blessings").
For Muslims:
There are seven heavens.
There are seven Earths.
For Buddhists:
Buddha walked seven steps at his birth.
In Chinese culture:
The seventh day of the first moon of the lunar year is known as Human's Day to be celebrated as the universal birthday of all human beings.
