    Aspen Institute Offers Scholarships to Minority Students for Summer Internships to Study Issues Relating to Philanthropy, Voluntarism and Nonprofit Organizations: Candidates Must Have Backgrounds in Social Sciences or the Humanities

    The Nonprofit Sector Research Fund, a grantmaking program of the Aspen Institute in Washington, DC, annually offers the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship, which is based on academic excellence and need, is open to both undergraduate and graduate students who are members of minority groups. The Hearst Scholar serves as a summer intern with the Fund. Through this program, the Fund seeks to introduce a diverse group of students to issues relating to philanthropy, voluntarism and nonprofit organizations. Recipients may arrange with their colleges or universities to receive academic credit for this experience.

    Activities: In his or her summer internship, the Hearst Scholar undertakes general research and program support for the Fund's grantmaking and outreach efforts.

    Requirements: The ideal candidate for this scholarship is a highly motivated continuing graduate or undergraduate student from an underrepresented community. She or he should have an excellent academic record and also have the following:
    Outstanding research skills
    A background in the social sciences or humanities
    Excellent writing and communication skills
    Demonstrated financial need.

    The student must be able to intern for 10-12 weeks full-time during the summer at the Washington, DC, office of the Aspen Institute. All travel and housing costs must be covered by the student. A scholarship grant of between $2,500 and $5,000 will be awarded, depending on the recipient's educational level, financial need, and time commitment.

    The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is a not-for-
    profit organisation that provides transitional development and

    New York office on a one-year contract. This position will

    Primary Responsibilities:

    Successful incumbent will have a B.A. degree, accompanied by 2
    years related office and research experience. Incumbent must have
    strong knowledge in the field of homeland security and an
    interest in policy-related research. Ability to manage competing
    priorities and multiple projects under tight deadlines.

    Must possess strong communication skills including the ability to
    effectively present information and respond to questions from
    constituency groups, media, governmental entities, and the
    general public. PC literate, specifically, MS Word, Excel and
    familiarity with web-based research tools.

    Research and Internship Grants

    The Kokkalis Program is welcoming applications for a limited number of
    small grants to be used
    towards undertaking non-paying (or low-paying) summer internship and/or
    research projects located
    in Southeastern Europe or concerning Southeastern Europe focusing on,
    but not limited to, the
    following fields: development (economic, sustainable, human resources,
    etc.), the public sector,
    government, human rights, social policy and security. The grants aim
    both to encourage and
    support work experiences or research that complements students’
    academic work, and to promote
    summer work experience and research in Southeastern Europe.

    Eligible to apply are students who are currently enrolled in
    undergraduate, graduate or PhD
    programs in any college or university. Students are responsible to
    find their own internships.

    HOW TO APPLY
    Applicants must submit the following:

    * 1-page proposal describing their internship or research proposal.
    Please include an explanation
    of how the internship you have secured is the best opportunity for you
    to gain the type of
    experience that you are seeking or, for research projects, how it
    relates to your academic work
    and goals. For both internships and research projects, identify
    specifically what your
    roles/tasks will be versus just providing the published internship
    description or a general
    description of the research project;
    * 1 letter of recommendation (i.e., from a faculty member from the
    student’s department or
    academic supervisor);
    * CV/Résumé;
    * Itemized budget, clarifying what expenses the grant money would be
    used to cover;
    * (Before final award of the grant) Proof of internship in the form of
    an official letter from the
    institution hosting the internship. This letter must be on the
    official letter-head of the host
    institution and signed by the internship supervisor or relevant person
    from the institution.
