1 Petr Cech (Chelsea): The Czech international has taken the Premiership by storm in his first season in English football and has outshone all the competition. Having broken the record for consecutive clean sheets, Chelsea’s defence seemed impenetrable at times during this campaign.

2 Ashley Cole (Arsenal): Although the England left back seemed to fade slightly in the wake of the Chelsea tapping up scandal, Cole has still been immense this season. The Arsenal defender retuned from Portugal with a newfound maturity after some stunning performances for England. Cole is without doubt the best left sided defender in the league.

3 Jamie Carragher (Liverpool): This season has seen Carragher transformed from a useful utility player to a vital cog in the Liverpool machine. The England hopeful’s transformation has been amazing this term and Carragher’s immense performances have helped Liverpool to their historic triumph in Istanbul. Possibly the most improved player in the Premiership this season!

4 John Terry (Chelsea): Voted the player’s player of the year, Terry has been vital in Chelsea’s first league success of the Abramovic era. Terry has put in a succession of inspirational performances for his side as the Chelsea captain led his team-mates by example. The England defender also chipped in with vital goals at vital moments when Chelsea seemed to be struggling at the other end.

5 Arjen Robben (Chelsea): The Dutch international has had a campaign hampered by injury but has still managed to make his mark in the few games he was able to start. Not since Thierry Henry has a foreign player made such an impact in the Premiership as Robben’s pace and skill ripped opposing defences to shreds.

6 Claude Makelele (Chelsea): The Frenchman failed to live up to expectation last season after his high profile move from Real Madrid. This term Makelele has been consistently outstanding in Chelsea’s midfield, protecting his back line. Makelele’s form has allowed the team a stable platform from which to build play.

7 Frank Lampard (Chelsea): Another Chelsea player to make the best XI this season. Lampard has appeared in the best XI almost weekly this term and has carried his team on both shoulders for some time now. The football writers player of the season has notched up an impressive tally of goals and assists and has led by example this season.

8 Steven Gerrard (Liverpool): The local hero has been Liverpool’s best player during the campaign and his immense performances helped his side capture the European Cup. Gerrard’s future has been the subject of many new stories but the speculation did not seem to affect his dedication to Liverpool. A true winner!

9 Shaun Wright Phillips (Man City): Manchester City star Phillips has had his best season so far for City resulting in international recognition as Sven gave him his full England debut. The pacy winger looks almost unstoppable when in full flight and a move away from Manchester City looks likely as his profile continues to rise.

10 Wayne Rooney (Man United): The youngster’s first season at the club may have ended trophy-less but Rooney’s form will be of some consolation. The former Everton prodigy has been a revelation in his debut season scoring spectacular goals and improving by the game. There seems no limit to what the youngster can achieve in the game.

11 Thierry Henry (Arsenal): Another season topping the scoring charts for the Frenchman . While Arsenal did not manage to retain their title, and Henry played little part in their F.A Cup success, the former Juve striker’s contribution cannot be discarded. The F.A Cup final showed what a difference Henry makes to the team.

11 Brian McBride (Fulham): The American striker proved with an opportunistic pair of goals that he and Fulham are well-matched.

Chelsea fan George Sumner tells the Goal.com fans how his 2004/2005 sesaon went, and what he hopes for the next.
What kept you going throughout the season? Great (or at least encouraging) results? Hope that things could only get better? Or simply blind loyalty?

In the first half of the season was the shock at actually not experiencing the kind of collapse every chelsea fan still secretly dreads, in the second half it was the inevitable yet somehow still immmensely tense title run-in.

• What were the best moments of the campaign – for example, the best performance / result?

Barcelona at home has to be one of the most incredible games of football ever witnessed, a shoe-in for game of the season but for Liverpool’s incredibly bloody-minded comeback on Wednesday. a special note as well for Everton at home, robben’s first goal for the club securing a lead in the league that would never be lost.

• And what were the worst?

west brom at home, he may have scored but with every miss, each more nauseating than the last, drogba highlighted the sheer lack of quality in his game.

• Who was your team’s best player of the season?

arjen robben, for a few brief yet glorious months giving a glimpse of the kind of flowing football possible for next season.

• And the worst?

drogba for the pricetag kezman for the ridiculous facade of a footballer he presents (but for his vital goal in the cup final)

• How did you rate the performance of your manager/coach?

9.5/10 tactical awareness and man management without peer, limited by a slight naivety in the transfer market.

• And the squad? (If you like, give the players marks out of ten, where ten is out of this world and one absolutely awful)

• What was your side’s goal of the season?

for aesthetic value it must be robben’s against norwich following tiago’s backheel flick, for significance it takes a lot to match terry’s header against barca and accompanying moment of gamesmanship from carvalho

• And what was the biggest howler during the campaign (eg a crazy own goal, shocking miss, bizarre team selection, etc)

the continued selection of kezman

• Who were the best opponents your team came up against? (Team and individual player)

barcelona, ronaldinho, beaten yes but football the way it should be played

• And the worst?

tottenham for mindset, norwich early season for ability

• How did the media generally treat your club?

with deserved acclaim, though a slight reluctance to admit us into any category above very good, despite the record breaking season

• What was the biggest slice of luck that went your way during the season?

eto’o’s miss following iniesta’s shot onto the post, as well as thierry henry blazing over an open goal for what would have been his hatrick
and surely an arsenal victory, the match ended 2-2.

• And what was the most outrageous in justice?

drogba’s sending off v barca (first leg) although the biggest injustice in any match involving chelsea was probably tiago’s missed handball at
anfield

• Looking ahead to next season, who would you most like to see arrive at your club?

anyone to fill the worrying void of quality up front, shevchenko would be perfect, gilardino a possibility and crespo perhaps the prodigal son.
also kaka to be that missing spark

• And which person(s) would you most like to see leave it?

kezman, despite all the effort, smertin and geremi.

• Overall, how did the campaign measure up to your pre-season expectations, and how did it compare with other seasons in which you’ve been
following them?

obviously any comparison to previous seasons is hugely unjust, although the sexy football under vialli is missed, the season exceeded all comparisons in terms of achievements, but the team was never as consistantly brilliant as it was capable of.

• What are you expecting from next season?

nothing less, maybe a little more, hopefully a bit more flair, though if the titles keep rolling in that will be the tiniest of pet complaints
