To all concerned,
The appointment of John Negroponte as National Intelligence Director presents the opportunity to review a chronology of events pertaining to Albanians, Greeks, and U.S.-Albania relations.
1997 - Bill Clinton appoints George Tenant CIA director. Tenant is a "Greek" American and both his parents were born in Albania. Furthermore, there are continuing claims that his mother and/or father are ethnic Albanians. Pyramid schemes collapse and Albania implodes with Tenant presiding as Deputy CIA director during this period (1995 to 1997).
1999 - NATO, led by the U.S., commences military intervention in Kosova to stop Serbs from their campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide against Albanians. In response, Greeks protest U.S. bombing of the Serbs.
2001 - Tenant presides as CIA director on 9/11. Because this act of terrorism happened on Tenant's watch, he becomes the target of numerous charges of incompetence by Senator Richard Shelby and other members of Congress.
2002 - James Jeffrey appointed U.S. Ambassador to Albania. Jeffrey had a long standing relationship with Nick Gage dating back to the 1980's when Jeffrey served as the desk officer for Greece at the State Department in Washington. Shortly after Jeffrey assumes his post as Ambassador, Nick Gage pops up in Tirana with Jeffrey escorting him around Albania as if Gage was a dignitary when in reality he holds no official portfolio. Albanian American community sends Secretary of State Colin Powell a letter to protest the Gage visit to Albania, and as a result, Jeffrey meets with Albanian Americans in New York to explain the Gage situation. At that meeting, Jeffrey tells those in attendance he was unaware of the sentiments of Albanians toward Gage - a blatant lie. Several months later, Jeffrey acts as Gage's host once again in Albania.
2004 - Tenant "resigns" as CIA director in 2004 widely viewed as a failure for his inability to apprehend Osama Binladin and for providing faulty intelligence on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. .
2004 - John Negroponte, a Greek American and former U.S. Ambassador to the UN (where he was the chief U.S. advocate of "standards before status" in Kosova), is appointed Ambassador to Iraq by President Bush. James Jeffrey is appointed as Negroponte's deputy in Iraq.
2004 - President Bush appoints Charles Ries as U.S. Ambassador to Greece, and several weeks later nominates his wife, Marci, as U.S. Ambassador to Albania. This is a first, a husband and wife appointed U.S. Ambassadors at the same time and in neighboring countries, and not just any two countries - Albania and Greece. Some argue this can be positive for relations between Albania and Greece because of the unusual circumstances of the American Ambassadors, while others remain skeptical and see this as a Greek orchestrated ploy in a on going attempt to exert regional hegemony over Albania.
2005 - President Bush nominates John Negroponte as National Intelligence Director. He has no background in intelligence, and while in Iraq he failed to apprehend al-Zarqawi and was also unable to effectively combat the insurgency.
There may be no relationship between any of the above events and this may all be attributable to coincidence. But even those who are not cynical by nature will have to admit there is a disturbing Greek thread that is woven throughout all of these developments.
