What makes a fighter? What enables him to excel to the level of world champion? For WBO Heavyweight Champion Lamon Brewster it is his faith in God, belief in himself, and taking chances
in life that others are afraid to take. Lamon Brewster has talent, speed, power, and skill, but
his biggest attribute might be his heart. Promoter Don King calls the champ the "Black Rocky",
because, when all seems lost, he digs in deep and finds victory, Just call it being "Relentless".
As the eldest of four children growing up in Indianapolis, Indiana, Lamon was an overly
energetic boy whose hero was Bruce Lee. Unfortunately for his mother's furniture, he karate-chopped and demolished everything in his path. After destroying his birthday present, a brand-new drum set,
his mother took him to the Riverside Gym hoping boxing classes would burn off some of his energy.
When most boys his age were playing video games, Lamon was training under the guidance of Bill Brown, who was a stable-mate and friend of heavyweight great Jack Dempsey. Lamon was a gifted all-around athlete, excelling in swimming, football and boxing, but the eighty year-old Brown encouraged Lamon to narrow his focus to the "sweet science", and, by the age of fifteen, he was fighting adults and winning.
Still, he was running with the wrong crowd. Lamon credits music for helping to turn his life around:
"Hip Hop saved my life. Namely Public Enemy. I would listen to them as I would get ready to go out. One day I really paid attention to the lyrics. I had never heard someone from the hood speak with
the pride and eloquence that Chuck D displayed. He was hard core, but saying positive things. That encouraged me not to give in to peer pressure. I know if I didn't change I would not be here."
In 1991, an eighteen-year old Lamon Brewster moved to Los Angeles to make a name for himself in the boxing world. Under the tutelage of legendary boxing trainer Bill Slayton, Lamon's amateur career was stellar. He was a two-time Indiana Golden Gloves Champion and a two-time California Golden Gloves Champion. He won the Indiana Expo, Ohio State Fair, a Silver medal in the Pan Am Games,
and, in 1995, he won the ABF Nationals. In 1996, he won the Olympic summer fest and brought home the Olympic Trial Runner-up Award. He was also voted the trials' boxer "Most Likely to Succeed as a Professional".
In the fall of 1996 the twenty-three year old Lamon Brewster embarked on the professional career that he had been dreaming about, and his debut was explosive. It took him only one round to dispose of his opponent. Twenty of his next twenty-one foes would meet the same fate, with thirteen knockouts coming in the first round. The only exception was a unanimous decision in which he won every round. Lamon was a hot heavyweight prospect when he caught the eye of critically acclaimed television writer-producer Sam Simon. Simon, the Co-Creator of "The Simpsons", had never managed before, but Lamon decided to take a chance on him. Simon: "This may be a hobby for me, but I realize it's truly life or death for Lamon. As talented as Lamon is inside the ring, I would never have gotten involved if he weren't such a fine young man outside of it."
Lamon's career hit a bump in the road when, in May of 2000, the undefeated hard-hitting heavyweight faced off with another undefeated prospect by the name of Clifford "The Black Rhino" Etienne. Lamon seemed to be on his way to his twenty-fourth straight win, but, late in the first round, Lamon tore the ligaments in his knee. The injury would have forced most fighters to quit, but, although it left him practically defenseless, Lamon showed his massive heart by continuing to brawl for the full ten rounds. Although he lost the decision, many considered it the Fight of the Year. In Lamon's words: "There was nothing I could do, but do my best with one leg. I'm not touchy on that subject, I laugh at it."
Although Lamon appeared to rebound from his first loss with a trademark first round knockout over
Val Smith, he was destined for another setback when he faced rising prospect Charles Shufford. Although he lost a decision, Lamon learned how to fight a taller opponent, a lesson that would prove
to be quite valuable. He also never stopped believing in himself.
Another person who still believed in Lamon was world-renowned boxing promoter Don King.
Shortly after signing with King, Lamon found himself battling it out for the vacant WBO NABO Heavyweight title against Nate "The Snake" Jones, who had never been stopped. After three rounds
of relentless punishment, the referee stopped the bout, and Lamon Brewster strapped on his first belt. After disposing of veteran Willie Chapman in six rounds, Lamon was ready to step in with the hard-hitting Tommy Martin. Martin had stopped his last three opponents by knock out and was in a nine
fight win streak, but it wasn't enough to withstand the power of the NABO Heavyweight champ.
Three rounds later Lamon was the new WBC Continental Americas heavyweight champ, but the
biggest test of his career was yet to come.
After bouts with Corrie Sanders and David Tua failed to materialize causing a lay-off over a year long, Lamon was set to face the towering 6'6" Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko, who was widely considered the best heavyweight fighter in the world. The challenge was further complicated when, months prior to the bout, Lamon lost his long time trainer and father figure Bill Slayton to cancer. Many believed that Lamon didn't belong in the ring with Klitschko and some didn't give the 9-1 underdog a chance at finishing the fight on his feet, but the boxing world was in for a surprise.
For four rounds Lamon absorbed Wladimir's jab and tasted the canvas for the first time in his career
in the fourth round, but he got up! In the fifth round, when all seemed lost Brewster dug in and landed two strong left hooks that started Klitschko's demise. Wladimir was given the standing eight count with the ropes holding the defenseless fighter up. After a barrage of Lamon's punches before the bell sounded ending round five, Klitschko was down and defeated. Lamon Brewster had shocked the world. He was the WBO heavyweight champion. Always a faith filled man Lamon had this to say about his victory over Klitschko: "The win was spiritual, at that moment when they announced me the winner, it wasn't the satisfaction that I won the title it was the satisfaction knowing that God blessed me with it.
It is beyond words."
After a successful defense of his WBO title against friend and former sparring partner Kali Meehan, Team Brewster added the highly knowledgeable trainer Jesse Reid to their arsenal and with a new bag of tricks Lamon marched into enemy territory to defend his WBO title. Even though Lamon was once again the underdog traveling into the hostile environment of Andrew Golotas hometown nothing could prepare the boxing world for what was about to go down, and what the Chicago crowd and the HBO viewers witnessed was an all out assault from the relentless one. In the opening round Brewster administered a vicious attack on the 64 brawler and with in ten seconds of the bout Lamon dropped the challenger with a grueling hook. In a gallant effort Golota reached his feet and continued to only
be met by more punishment from the champion and with another barrage of vicious blows Andrew was knocked partially through the ropes. After it was all said and done Lamon landed fifteen power shots that sent Golota to the canvas a total of three times in a fifty-three second time span proving once again why he holds the title of "Champion".
Once a young fighter with a dream to become champion, Lamon has evolved in one of today's top heavyweights and has produced some of boxing's most exciting bouts. Outside the ring, Lamon is committed to helping his community and has lent his time to promoting children's literacy, ending pet overpopulation, and combating AIDS. His acting credits include Missy Elliott's "Road to Stardom", "Ally McBeal", and "Daredevil". He believes his prowess at chess helps enable him to figure out ways to dismantle his opponents.
The loving husband and father of three may seem mild outside of the ring, but step into his office
and challenge the lion, and he becomes "Relentless" Lamon Brewster, a hard hitting, powerhouse
of a heavyweight, willing to seek out and destroy all that challenge his hold on his title.
