Jack Nicholson has nominated for an Academy Award 12 times and in every decade from the 1960s to 2000s. Nicholson is best known for his dark portrayal of neurotic characters on the screen.
He was a child of show business. His mother, June Frances Nicholson, was a showgirl who had an affair with a married man, Italian American Donald Furcillo After the pregnancy was discovered June's mother, Ethel, insisted that she bring up the baby, partly so that June could pursue her dancing career.
Nicholson was brought up believing that his grandparents, John Joseph Nicholson and Ethel May were his parents. Nicholson only discovered that his "parents" were actually his grandparents and his sister was in fact his mother in 1974, after a journalist for TIME magazine who was doing a feature on Nicholson informed him of the fact. By this time, both his mother and grandmother had died Nicholson has stated he does not know who his biological father is, saying "Only Ethel and June knew and they never told anybody". Nicholson has chosen not to have a DNA test or to pursue the matter.
Nicholson has been renown as a wild, reckless, free spirited individual never caring for what the celebrity magazines and media were reporting about his private life. He is not cut from the Hollywood PR machine that strives to show their clients as rich, jet setting celebrities. He is his own man.
