TIRANA, Albania (AFP) - Sending a letter or finding a friend's house in Albania is not that simple as much of the country doesn't have street names thanks to petty bickering between intractable politicians.


"I live in a green building," explained one resident of the capital Tirana, whose street literally has no name.


Another patient Tirana local describes his house as the one which "faces the bridge." For another, home is "that big brown building behind the bakery."


Some 40 percent of Albanians have no street address, according to at least one official.


"But what would happen if the bakery is closed, or its owner changes his line of business, or the brown facade turns into grey after long rains?" asked sociologist Mentor Kikia.


Servete Lohja, a doctor in a Tirana emergency hospital, said "most of the inhabitants of big Albanian towns don't know where they live."


"The districts have no names, and the buildings aren't numbered," she said.


"How can we talk of emergency aid if a person in need of urgent medical assistance loses time explaining where he or she lives?"


The government has recently adopted a bill calling for streets to be named as soon as possible but somehow the process has become mired in ideological disputes.


In the southern town of Gjirokastra, birth place of former Albanian communist strongman Enver Hoxha, the communists on the local council want to name the central square after him.


Right-wing councillors have opposed the plan and warned that if the square is named after Hoxha, a paranoid and xenophobic dictator, riots will break out in the streets.


In the central town of Lushnja, a recent council discussion about street names ended with a chair-fight which left three councillors injured.


"The battle started when the rightists demanded to name the main avenue in the town after a poet who is considered unworthy by the socialists," explained council employee Lulezim Rama, who had to call police to quell the brawl.


Calm-headed officials believe part of the problem is the fact that Albanian towns have received a large influx of migrants from the countryside in recent years and much of the new residential construction is completely illegal.


One consequence of the lack of street names is that it is almost impossible to organize a census, a key demand of Brussels as Albania negotiates entry into the European Union.

"How can anyone dream about Europe when they don't even know where they live?" asked Kikia.

Ke shume te drejte elmajico por kush e le rinine te ngrihet? Ata qe vijne e ikin nga pushteti flene mbi tufate me euro e dollare ndersa rinia e shkrete "le leshte" ne mergim. Shume nga keta te rinj punojne dhe studiojne ne te njejten kohe, vuajne jashte vendlindjes per nje cope shkolle, ndersa keta "zoterinj" bejne qejf neper poste qe populli ja u ka ofruar.
Pastaj ... nje pjese te fajit e kemi dhe ne si popull i trashe qe jemi. Pse??? A nuk qe ky kryeministri i sotem ai qe na dha armet neper duar ne per te vrare njeri tjeterin? A nuk qe ky ai person qe i tha shqiperise "Ik pirdhu" ??? A nuk qe ky ai qe e perzume "me shkelma"para 8 vjetesh??? Sot si ka mundesi qe e votojme serish dhe leme ne doren e tij serish Shqiperine e mjere??? Kjo nuk eshte nje propagande politike por thjeshte nje permbledhje e realitetit shqipetar qe shume prej nesh nuk arrijne ta shohin ashtu sic duhet. Eshte gjynah qe gjithe kjo rini te punoje per nje vend tjeter dhe ti ngreje vlerat nje vendi tjeter kur kete gje mund ta beje ne vendlindjen e tij... Thone qe kete fat patem! gabim .... Fatin e ben si te duash, dhe ne e beme keshtu. Paskemi lindur per te vojtur... !!!

Nuk kam me fjale per te ashtuquajturin " Realite Shqipetar"!

P.S. Une jam i papolitizuar. Kjo nuk ehste nje propagande politike. Mora si shembull kete pasi eshte i fresket por kjo sdo te thote qe ata qe lane karriket ishin me te mire. Jemi i vetmi vend ne bote ku 75% e gazetve,revistave dhe lajmeve ditore i ze politika dhe jo aktivitet sportive e kulturore ne pergjithesi. ZOTI QOFTE ME NE!

Fjalet e mesiperme jane realiteti i popullit tone, dhe pothuajse te gjitha keta probleme jane permendur, diskutuar dhe lexuar nga forumistat. Por c'fare po nxjerrim ne drite duke folur per realitetin qe te gjithe e dine? Une me kenaqesi i lexoj diskutimet te shumta qe jane bere por asnjehere si kam kuptuar si keta biseda kane vlere. Vlere kane deri aty qe ne s'kemi harruar vendlindjen, por vlerat e tjera cilat jane? Pra c'fare te mire do te nxjerrim ne me keta diskutimet?

Soni ne nje fare menyre ke te drejte por ka disa qe e kuptojne dhe ka disa qe nuk e kuptojne kte realitet; ka disa qe e vlersojnae dhe disa te tjere qe nuk e vleresojne... Nese te gjithe rrime ne heshtje behemi bashkepunetore ne shkaterrimin total te jetes shqipetare dhe te shqiperise ne pergjithesi. Keto fjale nuk duhet te rrijne te mbyllura ne kete ofrum por duhet te dalin dhe te lexohen nga mbare populli shqipetar. Ne jemi nje popull pa vetedije {rasti i postimit te meparshem qe ja morem karriken tjeterit me lufte dhe ja japim me deshire tani pas 8 vjetesh}...

Hajde me mend ne koke tani se skemi fuqine e duhur per te bere ndryshimet e nevojshme. Vetem te bashkuar ne shqipetaret do mund te cajme perpara...

Kleidi e kuptoj perqendrimin tend dhe me kane pelqyer te gjitha fjalet qe ke shkruajtur tek kjo teme. Une trishtohem sahere qe lexoj tema te tilla, merzitem sepse ceshtja e Shqiperise me duket e pa-shprese. Te gjithe themi qe shpresa vdes e fundit dhe kjo shpresa ma ka merzitur, hypur ne maj te hundes. Vecse me shpresa, enderra me sy hap, duhet te mendojme? Se di pse akoma vazhdoj te lexoj 'realitetin' kur ne fund te leximeve me rri mendja sa e sa i varfer eshte populli yne ne krahasim me vendin ku jetoj. Sa i pa organizuar eshte populli, kemi me shume se 10-vite qe jemi bere shtet demokratik dhe jemi akoma ne "transitional democracy" (demokraci ne tranzicion)....pra 10 vjet dhe as fjalen shtet demokratik se kemi arritur. Me shpresa kemi 10 vjet qe jetojme e deri ne varr valle me shpresa do jemi akoma?
