MALDEN, Mass. -- Each week, NewsCenter 5 presents a high school senior who has taken the lessons of the classroom and applied them to life.

This week's A Plus student is Malden High School's Sardi Pronja.

NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross said that life as a young immigrant in the United States can be challenging, especially if you have a physical disability.

Pronja's artistic talent can be seen with each stroke of his paintbrush, but his life story is his true masterpiece.

"He will be a famous artist. It's not even a question in my mind. He has the drive, he has the talent, and he has the ability to do whatever he wants to do," art teacher Rosalie Sidoti-Iacono said.

That ability developed as Pronja was overcoming major obstacles in his native Albania. When he was just 9 years old, he lost his dominant hand while playing soccer in his yard.

"And then a grenade fell from the sky in my back yard, and I didn't recognize it. Even if I have seen many grenades at that time. So I went near there and it exploded. And the next thing I remember is me in the hospital," Pronja said.

Pronja had to learn to do everyday activities all over again, but eventually discovered a new one: art. When increasing violence forced his parents to send him to live in the United States, Pronja was determined to bring his new passion with him.

"Sardi showed up at my door one day during a big class of about 32 students. And he just came in and looked bewildered. And I asked if I could help him and he said to me, 'I paint,' in sort of a broken English," Sidoti-Iacono said.

"Art is something that, when I'm painting, I forget about everything. I'm like on top of the world," Pronja.

A year and a half later, Pronja is an inspiration to the Malden High community.

"He has made such an imprint of the lives of many of his fellow students that they aspire to achieve more," said Sidoti-Iacono. "And I see that every day, that they look at him and they look at his work and I notice an improvement in their work as well."

Ne fillim kur nuk te kuptojne qe je shqiptar te sillen mire, se te marrin per amerikan, kur ju flet shqip ndrrojne atitude dhe tregojne fytyren e shqiptarit pa edukate. Me shume e shohim bosh se sa plot kete lokal. Kam qene vete me shume se pese a gjashte here.
Me amerikanet jane kaq servila sa te vjen per te vjelle, tamam si jargaxhij.

NE PERGJITHESI ne shqiptaret jemi pak "p.....c". Themi pse ty do te sherbej une??? Kush je ti te sherbej une??? Eshte si edukate shqiptari. Megjithate nejse mendoj se ke shkuar sic dua me shkuar dhe une (skam qene ndonje here por i am planning too) meqe e ka nje shqiptar e te ndihmojme njeri tjetrin. E po ste pelqeu nuk shkon me e kaq.
Kam pershtypjen se aty dhe kamarjeret duhet te flasin shqip meqe jane shqiptare. Nuk e di nuk flas dot mbasi ta shikoj e ta provoj do shkruaj prap te le mendimet e mia personale.
