UNITED NATIONS The Vatican -- in its first speech ever to the United Nations General Assembly -- has criticized the war in Iraq and unilateral responses to terrorism.
A Vatican official (Archbishop Giovanni Lajolo) referred to the pope's fervent opposition to the war in Iraq, saying that military action did not lead to a "safer world, either inside or outside Iraq."
But he stressed the need to support Iraq's new government in bringing democracy to the country.
He said nations must work together to tackle growing terrorism.
He says the Roman Catholic Church is doing its part in that work by promoting understanding among religions.
