'Balla' and 'Basti' seal winning start


07.08.2004 Goals from Michael Ballack and in-form Sebastian Deisler either side of half-time sealed a winning start to the new campaign for Bayern in sun-drenched Hamburg on Saturday.

A capacity 55,000 crowd at the AOL Arena saw Bayern assume command after the opening quarter of an hour and take a deserved lead through Ballack's crisp drive on 22 minutes.

Roque Santa Cruz missed a golden opportunity to settle the issue before half-time, and Bayern were almost made to pay as the home side poured forward after the hour.

However, Deisler calmed the situation as his 71st minute free-kick found the net through the wall and off both post and goalkeeper, and

Coach Felix Magath's first starting line-up contained no major surprises as he sent out the eleven which saw off Leverkusen and Bremen to claim the pre-season League Cup, with the solitary addition of World Cup winner Lucio in central defence at the expense of Martin Demichelis.

Much was expected of the high-class midfield diamond featuring new signing Torsten Frings in front of the back four, Ballack and Deisler to the left and right and Zé Roberto supporting the front two.

Hamburg paraded newly signed captain Daniel van Buyten and a familiar Bundesliga face, Belgium hitman Emile Mpenza in a side hurriedly reshaped to cover for the sudden departure of Czech star Tomas Ujfalusi to Fiorentina.

With a pitch-level temperature of 32 degrees centigrade at kick-off the sides set off at a moderate pace, Hamburg's Barbarez and Kling and Santa Cruz and Makaay for Bayern trading half-chances before the visitors upped the tempo on the quarter-hour.

Home keeper Pieckenhagen did well to claw away Makaay's deflected effort after 16 minutes, but he could do nothing to prevent Ballack blasting the Reds in front six minutes later with a superb low drive after Zé had robbed Benjamin on half-way and completed a mazy run to the edge of the box, teeing up his fellow midfielder with a cheeky back-heel.

The contest turned tasty for a period as Hamburg opted to mix it physically, but the chances were falling to the visitors.

Deisler worked a great move on the half-hour although he might have done better to pick out Makaay, before Santa Cruz squandered the potential decider after 35 minutes, tamely side-footing at Pieckenhagen following tremendous work down the flank from Görllitz.

The only worrying moment for captain Oliver Kahn came three minutes from the break as he dropped Rahn's corner under pressure from Kling, but the defence scrambled clear and Bayern preserved their lead until half-time.

Vahid Hashemian made his top flight debut for Munich in place of Makaay after the interval and his hard-running style was a boon as the home side emerged in determined mood.

The best chance fell to Romeo after 58 minutes but Kahn stood his ground and beat away the striker's effort. Magath now introduced veteran Mehmet Scholl in place of an exhausted Santa Cruz and the skilled midfielder announced his presence with a rasping drive just past the upright.

But just as the visitors were beginning to wobble, they broke upfield and struck a devastating blow in the 71st minute. Hamburg sub Stefan Beinlich had not been on the field 60 seconds before collecting a booking for holding Deisler, and the talented midfielder struck the resulting free-kick through the wall, off the post and the back of keeper Pieckenhagen's head and into the net.

'Basti' will not have worried about the fortunate nature of the goal as it crowned a remarkable comeback from the vicissitudes of injury and depression which have blighted his time in Bavaria to date.

The home side huffed and puffed but the clear-cut chances still fell to the visitors. Scholl teed up Lucio after the centre-back's trademark burst from the back but the Brazilian was thwarted at the death, Deisler totally miskicked with the goal at his mercy on 86 minutes, and Scholl was hustled out of a good opportunity shortly afterwards, but it did not matter as Bayern ran down time for a deserved win.
