PODGORICA -- Monday – Two senior officers of the Serbia-Montenegro Army have been arrested on suspicion of long-term espionage, Podgorica daily Vijesti writes today, quoting sources close to the highest echelons of the army.

According to Vijesti’s source the affair could become broader because there is evidence that other officers are involved.

Investigation so far has revealed that the two colonels and one lieutenant colonel arrested so far have been supplying information to the intelligence service of “a large eastern country”.

All three officers are believed to have been paid through accounts in an Israeli bank.

“A recent payment discovered by the military security service amounted to 16,000 euros and was pain into the account of one of the arrested officers,” writes Vijesti, adding that this officer appeared to be running an espionage network at the heart of the military leadership.

“The paper adds that the role of a Montenegrin businessman with a permanent residence in Moscow is also being investigated because he is suspected of being a go-between for payments.

The investigation has also focused on a foreign citizen, a long-term resident of the Montenegrin coast, who is ostensibly dealing with tourism investments and who is believed to have liaised with espionage agents in the army.

MOSCOW, BELGRADE -- Monday – Russian intelligence services today declined to comment on reports that three senior Serbia-Montenegro Army officers have been working as Russian agents.

“In accordance with the practice of special services in the whole international community, we do not comment on this kind of information,” said Russian intelligence spokesman Boris Labusov.

Sources close to the Defence Ministry told B92 today that more than the three officers so far arrested in the affair are involved.
