RIAA deploys big guns in piracy war

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has taken a savage step to protect US music copyrights, Bradley Buckles, director of the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Buckles was appointed director of the ATF by Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers on December 20, 1999. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971 from the University of Wyoming and his Juris Doctor from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, in 1974. He is a member of the Kansas State Bar.

Electronic Frontier Foundation staff attorney Jason Schultz said: "This is just another example of the RIAA's ongoing plan to treat American consumers like criminals instead of customers.

"If they really wanted to solve their file-sharing problems, the RIAA should have considered hiring someone with a business plan rather than a baton and a bulletproof vest."

Go Kart Records, which has previously spoke out against efforts to stem online music trading, teamed up with Kazaa to release a download-only sample.

Downloading is Not a Crime is available only in digital format. Distributed through Kazaa, the compilation hopes to show that peer-to-peer file sharing networks can be a tool for band promotion.

The label has been outspoken in its opposition of The Recording Industry Association of America's litigation to stem file swapping. In October, the label published an open letter to the RIAA criticizing its policies
