Encompassed in a love so profound,
incomparable to all he has known.
Propelled into this wondrous whirlwind,
his heart understands she is his alone.
Come into the infinite garden of the heart and behold its many sweet fruits!
See its dancing green boughs , behold the gentleness of thornless roses!
How long will you look at the form of the world's body ?
Return, and behold its inward mysteries!
(D 11648-50)
In the verdant garden of Love , which has no end,
there are many fruits besides heartache and joy.
Loverhood is beyond these two states.
It is green and fresh without autumn and spring.
(M I 1793-94)
HOW SHOULD THE SOUL not take wings
when from the Glory of God
It hears a sweet, kindly call:
"Why are you here, soul? Arise!"
How should a fish not leap fast
into the sea form dry land
When from the ocean so cool
the sound of the waves reaches its
How should the falcon not fly
back to his king from the hunt
When from the falconer's drum
it hears to call: "Oh, come back"?
Why should not every Sufi
begin to dance atom-like
Around the Sun of duration
that saves from impermanence?
What graciousness and what beauty?
What life-bestowing! What grace!
If anyone does without that, woe-
what err, what suffering!
Oh fly , of fly, O my soul-bird,
fly to your primordial home!
You have escaped from the cage now-
your wings are spread in the air.
Oh travel from brackish water
now to the fountain of life!
Return from the place of the sandals
now to the high seat of souls!
Go on! Go on! we are going,
and we are coming, O soul,
From this world of separation
to union, a world beyond worlds!
How long shall we here in the dust-world
like children fill our skirts
With earth and with stones without value,
with broken shards without worth?
Let's take our hand from the dust grove,
let's fly to the heavens' high,
Let's fly from our childish behaviour
and join the banquet of men!
Call out, O soul, to proclaim now
that you are rules and king!
You have the grace of the answer,
you know the question as well!

'Look! This is Love'
Rumi
Without doubt congeneity derives from meaning,
not from water and clay.
Beware! Do not become a form-worshiper!Seek
not the secret of congeneity in form.
Form is like an inanimate object , a stone;
inanimate things know nothing of congeneity.
Consider the spirit an ant and the body a grain
of wheat: Each instant the ant drags the grain back and forth.
It well knows that those borrowed grains will be transformed and become
the same kind as itself.
One ant has found a barley-corn in the road,
and another seizes a grain of wheat and runs.
Barley does not charge toward wheat, but ant
comes toward ant , yes indeed.
The fact that the wheat goes toward the barely
is secondary: Look at the ant, returning to its own kind.
Don not ask , " Why has the wheat gone
to the bearely?" Fix your eaye on the antagonist, not on his hostage.
A black ant on a black felt cloth is hidden but
the grain is before you on the way.
The intellect tells the eye, "Look well! How can
a grain move without a carrier?"...
Discern the difference between ugly and
beautiful with the intellect , not with the eye which speaks
about "balck" and "white"...
The bird's bane is the eye that sees its desire;
the bird's deliverance is the intellect that sees the snare.
But there are other snares not perceived by the
intellect. Hence Revelation , which sees the Unseen, sped to this side.
One kind may be discerned form another
through the intelelct : It is not proper to hurry to the forms.

Mathnawi-yi ma'nawi , ed. NicholsonKodi:The Kaaba for the spirits and Gabriel: the Sidra-tree, The qibla of the gluton, that is the table-cloth. The qibla for the gnostic: the light of union with God, The qibla for the reason, philosophizing: vain thougt! The qibla of the ascetic: the beneficient God, The qibla of the greedy: a purse that's filled with gold. The qibla of those who look at true meaning , is patience fine, The qibla of those esoterics is He, the Lord of Grace, The qibla of these exoterists is but a woman's face ...
- Every sensual desire in the world , whether
property,position, or bread,
Can make you drunk. Then when you do not
find it , you become winesick.
This winesickness-which is heartache-is proof
that you were drunk with your desire.
( M III 2257-59)
O Thou who cut off my sleep, went into a
corner, and sat down!
Thou entered my heart like a moon-but when
the heart looked at Thee, Thou wert gone.
Since Thou displayed the garden of
Nonexistence, how should we have patience with existence ?
When a spirit has found union and intoxication,
what will be its state in seperation's winesickness?
How could that house reamin standing whose
pillar Thou hast broken down through seperation?
Oh drunken brain , you thought you had escaped
form the suffering of winesickness!
But in Love , there are union and seperation-on
the road, there are ups and downs.
Though you know God in one respct , in ten
respects you worship water and clay!
You still must travel a long journey before you
reach the place you seek in your madness.

Let me free so that like the Sun
I shall wear a robe of fire,
And within that fire like a Sun to adorn the world !
Jalāl al-Din Rumi
- Man is taken to each thing by his image of that thing.
His image of a garden takes him to a garden, his image of a shop to a shop.
But deception is hidden in imagination.
Do you not see that you go to a certain place and then regret it ?
You say, " I imagined it would be good , but it was not."
So these images are like tents within which someone is hidden.
When the images are finally removed and the realities appear wihtout the tent of imagination , that will be the RESURRECTION.
When this takes place , there will be no more regret.
Whatever reality has attracted you will be nothing else -that very reality will have attracted you.
(F 7/19)
The only profit of speech is that it may cause you to seek and incite your desire.
The goal is not realized through speech itself.
If this were not so , there would be no need for all this spiritual warfare and self-annihilation.
Speech is as if you see something form afar and then you run after it in order to see it.
You do not see it from that movement at a distance.
(F 193-194/202)
Concise and profitable speech is like a lit lamp that kisses an ulit lamp and departs.
That is enough for it, for it has attained its goal.
After all , a profet is not that outward form.
His form is his steed.
A profet is Love and Affection , and that subsists forever.
(F 226-227/234)
These words are for the person who needs words in order to comprehend.
There is no need for words with the one who can comprehend without words.
After all, the heavens and the earths are a discourse for the one who comprehends it , born as they are form the utterance " Be and it is . "
What need han a man who can hear a soft voice for shouting and yelling ?
(F 22/33)
Fihe mā fih
Jalāl al-Din Rumi
- Between the human being and God are just two
veilshealth and wealthall other veils come
from these. Those who are healthy do not look
for God and do not see Him, but as soon as pain
afflicts them they cry out, O God! O God! calling
out and surrendering to God. Therefore,
health is their veil and God is hidden in their pain.
As long as people have wealth, they gratify
their desires, and are preoccupied night and day
with pleasures. The moment poverty appears,
their spirits are weakened and they turn to God.
Drunkenness and poverty brought You to me,
I am the slave of Your drunkenness and need!
God granted to Pharaoh four hundred years of
life, kingship and enjoyment. All that was a veil,
which kept him far from the presence of God. He
did not even experience a single day of disagreeableness
and pain, so that he would completely
forget God. God said, Go on being preoccupied
with your own desire, and do not even think of
me. Good night!
King Solomon grew weary of his reign,
But Job was never sated of his pain.

Enthralled Only by Love
whenever you meet
someone deep drunk
yet full of wisdom
be aware and watch
this person is enthralled
only by love
anytime you see
someone who seems gone
tipsy and happy
filled with rapture
be sure and observe
this is the condition
of someone in love
if you see a head
happy and thrilled
filled with joy
every night and day
this head was fondled
by the fingers of love
every moment
someone is blessed
a tree sprouts
an angel flies
even a monster
leaps with delight
when your body
feels together
when your soul
wants to unite
you are chosen
for a blissful love
