Barring an unlikely, last-minute reprieve, 1,000 lambs are to be slaughtered on Wednesday at the high point of celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of Albanian independence.

The mass slaughter, organised by the government of Albania's prime minister, Sali Berisha, has stirred controversy and protest, with one opponent describing it as a "grotesque embarrassment". On Monday, members of the youth wing of the opposition Socialist party protested outside the prime minister's office, carrying banners and large photographs of lambs.

Three heads of state and at least five government leaders are expected in the capital, Tirana, to attend the celebrations at which the cooked lamb will be served to guests on two 200 metre-long tables. Albania proclaimed its independence from the Ottoman empire on 28 November 1912, when the red-and-black standard of its national hero, Skanderbeg, was raised in the town of Vlore.

The body of Albania's pre-war ruler, King Zog, has been returned to his homeland to mark the anniversary. Festivities have included concerts, parades and the construction of a centennial monument. But it is the slaughter of the lambs that has galvanised Berisha's opponents.

"This is a country that is traditionally not very vegetarian – let's put it that way," said the Socialists' youth spokesman, Erjon Veliaj. "The issues of animal rights and cruelty are not pre-eminent. But to glorify this process gives this society a reputation it doesn't deserve."

He added: "I think there are a lot of things to celebrate in this country, from Mother Teresa to the Blues Brothers and to put this seal of grotesque embarrassment on the festivities is dismaying." Mother Teresa of Calcutta – born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu - was an ethnic Albanian from Skopje. John Belushi, star of the 1980 cult movie, was the son of Albanian emigrants to America.

Around 80% of Albania's population is Muslim, with most of the remainder Roman Catholic or Orthodox. But the country has strong traditions of secularism and religious moderation.

The prime minister's office could not be contacted for comment.

100 vjetori i pavarësisë është shumë pranë dhe ne po shohim përgatitjen e shumë aktiviteteve festive. Jemi të lumtur të festojmë një datë kaq të rëndësishme dhe vlerësojmë të gjitha përpjekjet për ta bërë këtë përvjetor një ngjarje të paharruar. Kjo është një kohë kur cdo shqiptar duhet të kujtojë të kaluarën, të reflektojë mbi mësimet e nxjerra nga historia dhe, si qytetar, të përkushtohet për të ndërtuar një të ardhme më të bukur, të begatë, të civilizuar dhe dinjitoze për vendin. Por prej pak kohësh nëpër media po qarkullon një urdhër i pazakontë i Kryeministrit. Sipas këtij urdhri, duhet të merren masa për therjen e 1000 deshëve dhe 1000 qengjave. Mishi i kafshëve do t’iu shërbehet (apo shitet?) qytetarëve të Tiranës që do të festojnë përvjetorin e pavarësisë. Kjo do të ishte një mënyrë shumë e papërshtatshme për të festuar. Ky urdhër e con Shqipërinë në shekullin e kaluar ose edhe më mbrapa në kohë. Shqipëria do të bëhej turpi dhe gazi i vendeve të Komunitetit Evropian, në të cilin ajo kaq shumë po përpiqet të bëjë pjesë. Therja në masë e kafshëvë të pafajshme për të festuar përvjetorin më të rëndësishëm kombëtar është mizore, e panevojshme dhe si praktikë, i përket një të shkuare të largët dhe barbare. Kjo nuk është mënyra se si unë dua të festoj përvjetorin e pavarësisë së Shqipërisë: unë dua ta ndaj këtë ngjarje të shënuar me fqinjët e mi Evropianë pa u turpëruar për vendin tim. Pak muaj më parë, një mbledhje e Qeverisë kërkoi marrjen e masave të forta për të ndëshkuar therjen e kafsheve nëpër rrugë dhe shkeljen e rregullave sanitare. Në atë mbledhje u përdor termi “Mesjetë”. Ne nuk duam ta dëgjojmë atë fjalë të përdoret përsëri për Shqipërinë. Kjo mund të shmanget. Ne duam të jemi krenarë për Shqipërinë. Ne duam një Shqipëri që i përket vërtet shekullit të 21-të dhe familjes së madhe Evropiane. Dhe kjo është ajo që duan për Shqipërinë edhe shumë të huaj që e kanë firmosur këtë peticion. Dëgjojini zërat tanë dhe të tyre. Ju kërkojmë që të urdhëroni që ato kafshë të pafajshme të mos vriten.

E ç'do të mbushin mullët katunarët me 28 nëntor, e do t'u shkojë kolesteroli sa t'u plasë arteriet. Në fakt, sala e ka menduar mirë, me këtë rast heq qafe një turmë me brekëgrisur katunarë, që për një copë mish e sallam të japin votën.

Qeveria kishte marrë parasysh kërkesat për mostherjen e qingjave. Falemnderit qeveri!

In Tirana's central Skanderbeg Square, an 18-ton cake was distributed to the public, followed by a military parade.

Berisha's earlier plans to slaughter 2,000 sheep and publicly roast them for the occasion were scrapped after an outcry by animal rights groups.
