Sokratis (Socrates), an Orthodox Christian from Elbasan in central Albania, August 1991. He told me about the practice of vėllamėria, also known as adelphopoeia, pobratimstvo and bratotvorenie (English translation here), a same-sex ceremony of union common in parts of Albania and northwest Greece, which survived both the anti-religious and anti-gay actions of the former communist regime in Albania and continued to be performed in 1991 in Elbasan. He lived with other Albanian emigres in Megara for awhile until the police raided the house and he disappeared (this kind of harassment and discrimination against Albanians was and is unfortunately quite common in Greece). If anyone has any information regarding his current whereabouts, it would be much appreciated. His wife remained in Elbasan, Albania (Disclaimer: The mentioning of the information he provided about ceremonies in Elbasan should not be construed as an indication of his sexual orientation. Heterosexuality does not prevent one from speaking about homosexual-related topics without prejudice, as I have often found in speaking to Albanians from various parts of Albania and Kosova).
A D E L P H O P O I I A (The Rite of Spiritual Brotherhood)
This service is a rite of the Eastern Orthodox Church dating from
very early times and assuming its present form between the fourth
and ninth centuries AD. This service is translated from the
Euchologion of Jacobus Goar, which was printed in 1647 and
revised in 1730. A facsimile of the 1730 edition, published in Graz,
Austria, in 1960, is the edition available in many theological
libraries. With the rising influence of western ideas in recent
centuries, this rite ceased to be practiced widely and was largely
forgotten or ignored except in isolated areas, most notably Albania
and other areas in the Balkans, where it flourished throughout the
nineteenth century and up to at least 1991. Both men and women
were united with this rite or similar ones. Nowadays, this rite is
performed in the Orthodox church at Elbasan in central Albania, and
at some Orthodox churches in the U.S. (while other Orthodox will
vehemently reject the rite). There are other manuscripts of this
rite available, e.g. in Russian trebniki (prayer-books); John Boswell
has looked over about 100 adelphopoiia manuscripts which he will
discuss in John Boswell, _Same-Sex Unions in Pre-Modern Europe_ (June,
1994).
This rite is called "spiritual" because the relationship between
spiritual brothers is not one of blood-relation but of the Holy Spirit,
and also to distinguish the rite from blood-brotherhood, which the
Church opposed. In the service, the saint-martyrs Sergius and
Bacchus are invoked, who were united in spiritual brotherhood "not
bound by the law of nature but by the example of faith in the Holy

Spirit". These saints were tortured and martyred late in the third
century A.D. when they refused to worship the emperor's idols. In
their biography by Simeon Metaphrastes (available in J.P. Migne,
_Patrologia Graeca_, vol. 115, pp. 1005-1032) they are described as
sweet companions and lovers to each other.
This rite is incorporated into the Divine Liturgy. It begins with the
usual blessing and prayers of a Liturgy. During the Great Synapte,
petitions for the couple to be united in spiritual brotherhood are
added to the usual petitions. After the First Antiphon, two special
prayers are said for the couple, after which they kiss the Gospel
Book and each other. After the priest sings a hymn, the Liturgy
continues at "Have mercy on us, O God .. ". Accounts of the use
of this rite (such as Naecke, _Jahrbuch fuer sexuelle
Zwischenstufen_ 9 (1908),. 328) confirm that the spiritual brothers
receive Holy Communion together, thereby forming the sacramental
bond in this union. However, Goar mentions in a footnote that in
some manuscripts, the couple is only blessed with holy water.

Ja edhe prova qe Shendelli nuk eshte fare ortodoks, ne asnje kuptim praktik te kesaj fjale.
Shkrimi i mespierm eshte nje shpifje anti-ortodokse tipike e atyre perendimoreve, sidomos nder boten gjermanishtfolese, aq te njohur per frymen anti-sllavo ortodokse, por pervec kesaj eshte nje shkrim me gabime te qellimshme.
Po ashtu, ky lloj shkrimi nuk mund te sillet vecse nga anti-ortodokse, ne shprese turperimi.
Te akuzosh ortodoksine per sektet qe fshihen ne te...eshte injorance e mirefillte fetare edhe historike!
Ajo qe eshte fakt eshte se Kisha Ortodokse e quan Herezi nje lloj jete te tille!

Faliminderit Honezmi! Do ishte me mire te ishim te bashkuar ndaj ketyre bukeshkaleve. Nuk vjen pranvera me nje lule. Prandaj nuk dua thjeshte te me pergezoni por edhe te me ndihmoni me materiale.
Shendelli, 2 gjera kam per te shkruajtur mbi kete teme:
1. Njerezit e Zotit nuk bejne plane per te dale ne krye te KOASH pasi ata e kane lene jeten e tyre dhe te komunitetit te tyre ne Doren e Zotit.
2. Orthodokset nuk e kerkojne ndryshimin brenda komunitetit duke ndermarre nisma politike, por duke iu lutur Zotit.
A mendon ti se Zoti do ti braktiste per here te dyte sherbetoret e tij orthodokse shqiptare, pas 30 vjetesh ateizmi dhe mohimi te Flales se Tij?!
Nuk eshte "rastesi" qe Janullatos eshte ne krye te KOASH dhe qe ta kuptosh kete hidhi nje sy komunitetit orthodoks shqiptar ne Shqiperi dhe Kishave Orthodokse qe po i rikthehen tradites shekullore te besimit fale perkushtimit 12 vjecar te Hiresise se Tij.
Nuk duhet te bejme plane, duhet te lutemi qe te kuptojme edhe mesojme planin e Zotit per Shqiptaret.

Albo perendia te jep mendje per ta vene ne pune. Sipas teje i bie qe njerzit te mos punojne vetem te luten e te presin se mbase do ndodhi ndonje mrekulli. Keshtu qe me menyren time te menduarit une them se njerzit duhet te perpiqen qe te vene ne krye te kishes nje shqiptar.
Une nuk pres nga zoti te qe te vihet ne krye te kishes nje shqiptar nese une nuk luftoj! Nese une do te luftoj dhe te tjeret bashke me mua atehere zoti do te vendosi nje bari shqiptar ne krye te grigjes shqiptare.
Une nuk mendoj se zoti do ti braktisi shqiptaret ashtu si nuk i braktisi per 30 vjet por as shqiptaret nuk e braktisen zotin per 30 vjet. Nisur nga ky perfundim ne zoti nuk ka per te na harruarr nese nuk harrojme te luftojme ashtu si per 30 vjet nuk u harrua te luftohej.
Une ne asnje menyre nuk mund te behem i verber e te mos shoh kishat e ngritura gjate kesaj perjudhe por ne te njejten kohe nuk mund te behem i vereber e te mos shoh se ne ato kisha ka ikona te shkruajtura ne greqisht, se nuk meshohet ne shqip ne Sarande e ne Himare se gjuha e meshes eshte zvenitur me fjale te panevojshme greke. Si mendon nje njeri qe ka kaq para sa per te ngritur kaq kisha nuk ka para per te lyer me dy gisht boje nje emer shenjtori ne shqip? Nuk u prish bota pa ato ikona ne shqip por ato simbolizojne dicka shume te madhe dhe une per veten time shoh keqadashesi pas ketij akti. Sa kushton te fshish 10 cm2 nga cdo ikon? Mos vall une duhet ti shoh ato sa here qe futem ne kishe dhe te pres nga zoti ti nderroj? Si do ti nderroj zoti pa neve? Zoti kurr nuk predikuar te rrim e te presim nga ai pa levizur. Mund te me japesh nje mendim pse keto ikona nuk jane shkruajtur ne shqip por vetem te lutem nese do me pergjigjesh mos mu pergjigj me skajizem te tipit Klod.
