"JUSTIFIED": God's Gonna Cut You Down

I've been hearing a lot of buzz about this series for two years but for some reason never tuned in to check it out. The other day some folks were discussing the latest episode and overhead these words "Harlan County". Immediately my interest in the series on FX was magnified.

I've been hearing about Harlan County, Kentucky all my life. There is some rogue gene running through that population that makes them extremely independent, reckless and game. I might add these people of the hills of Eastern Kentucky are the epitome of the wild, free and crazy mountain folk of Southern Appalachia. These are not people to antagonize. There is the law of the land involving Federal, State and local Statutes and there is the Code of the Hills. Mountain folk in the South even today still will abide the Code of the Hills over all other laws and customs. I have branches of my family that made illegal moonshine whiskey and defied the government of the Unites States that mandated making untaxed liquor was a Federal crime. Living outside of the law is no stranger to the people of Appalachia.

I have a message for all you "bad people" around this country, La Cosa Nostra, Russian Mafia, Mexican Mafia, Crips and Bloods, Hell's Angels and Banditios Outlaw Biker Gangs....
Stay out of Harlan County.

Storyline

U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is a modern day 19th century-style lawman, enforcing his brand of justice in a way that puts a target on his back with criminals and places him at odds with his bosses in the Marshal service. That conflict results in a reassignment for Givens to the U.S. District covering the town where he grew up. He is an anachronism - a tough, soft spoken gentleman who finds his quarry fascinating, but never gives an inch. Dig under his placid skin and you'll find an angry man who grew up hard in rural Kentucky, with an outlaw father, who knows a lot more about who he doesn't want to be than who he really is.

Storyline

We, Americans have a history and culture of being armed and sometimes violent. Nowhere is this characteristic more ingrained than in the culture of the immigrants that settled in the mountains of Southern Appalachia. There have been hundreds of movies (400 Silent) made about this unique part of America.

The best is "Sergeant York" staring Gary Cooper about the most famous American solider of Word War I.

"JUSTIFIED" is proving to be a stellar cable series possibly equal to or even better than "The Sopranos". I just purchased the Season One DVD Set on Ebay.

Here's a part of one episode that is the essence of the violence, humor and mystique of the Harlan Country tribe written into the series.

Raylan (Marshall Givens) has been invited to a wilderness retreat to break bread with Boyd and members of his criminal organization.

Raylan requests to pray.....

Dear Lord,
before we eat this meal we ask forgiveness for our sins, especially Boyd- who blew up a black church with a rocket launcher, and afterwards he shot his associate Jared Hale in the back of the head out on Tate's Creek bridge.
Let the image of Jared's brain matter on that windshield not dampen our appetites, but may the knowledge of Boyd's past sins help guide these men.
May this food provide them with all the nourishment they need. But, if it does not, may they find comfort in knowing that the United States Marshal Service is offering fifty-thousand dollars to any individual providing information that will put Boyd back in prison.

One of the things I like about this series is the characters are portrayed as believable real people. Despite a lack of education and wealth the people are vibrant, colorful and savvy. Contrast "Justified" with "Miami CSI" where the lead character, Lieutenant Horatio Caine (David Caruso) is continuously taking off and putting on his sunglasses while displaying his grim personality and talking somberly to people like he just emerged from major depression. The rest of the characters on the series are dull and one dimensional. When it comes to entertainment give me those wild, crazy, demonic dastardly Harlan people any day of the week.

Raylan (Marshall Givens) has a "Dirty Harry" mindset, draws a gun like Johnny Ringo and shoots accurately like Alvin York. The bad guys fear and hate him. It's like Ethan Edwards from "The Searchers" has come back to life and become a Marshall in present day Harlan County. What I really treasure is how Raylan is such a smart ass defying the bad guys verbally before he challenges them physically.

The last episode was complicated with too many subplots. Churchill once said "Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma." That's all well and good but don't bring that mindset to Harlan County. I'm still running behind because I came into the series only after the third season began and now the writers are going Dostoyevsky on me. Please. Keep story basic and clear like Ethan Edwards going against Chief Scar in "The Searchers"
