Seit September fliegt die russische Luftwaffe Angriffe in Syrien. Dabei wird immer wieder angeprangert, dass Putins Bomber auch Hunderte Zivilisten töten. Ausgerechnet die Nato allerdings lobt Russland: Der Einsatz sei "präzise und effizient", heißt es - und hätte eine deutlich größere Wirkung als der Einsatz der Nato-Flotte.
Das nordatlantische Militärbündnis Nato hat der in Syrien eingesetzten russischen Luftwaffe ein hohes Maß an Professionalität bescheinigt. Dies berichtet das Nachrichtenmagazin FOCUS unter Berufung auf eine vertrauliche Nato-Analyse aus Brüssel.
Obwohl die Kampfflugzeuge der russischen Streitkräfte den Jets der westlichen Allianz zahlenmäßig deutlich unterlegen sind, erzielten die Kreml-Piloten bei Einsätzen gegen das Terror-Netzwerk IS und andere Rebellengruppen insgesamt eine größere Wirkung. Grund dafür sei die höhere Frequenz der russischen Luftangriffe, zitiert FOCUS aus dem Geheimpapier.
Demnach flogen rund 40 der bei Latakia stationierten russischen Kampfjets zuletzt bis zu 75 Einsätze pro Tag. Die Luftschläge seien „präzise und effizient“. Die Nato-Flotte mit insgesamt 180 Maschinen griff täglich lediglich 20 Ziele am Boden an. Präsident Wladimir Putin, Oberbefehlshaber der russischen Streitkräfte, will in nächster Zeit bis zu 140 Kampfjets in Syrien einsetzen. Kürzlich ließ er bereits vier hochmodernde Maschinen vom Typ Suchoi Su-35 nach Latakia verlegen. Die Su-35 ist nach Ansicht von Fachleuten den meisten Fliegern aus westlicher Produktion überlegen.

Laut NATO galten bislang nur 20 Prozent der russischen Angriffe der terroristischen IS-Miliz. Die übrigen Attacken richteten sich gegen Anti-Assad-Milizen, von denen einige vom Westen unterstützt werden. Die starke Präsenz der Kampfflieger hat dazu geführt, dass es seit Wochen keine großen Bewegungen der Aufständischen mehr am Boden gibt. Insbesondere die Terror-Miliz IS, die zur Propaganda mit langen Fahrzeug-Kolonnen durch besetzte Gebiete fuhr, verzichtet nunmehr aus Angst vor Luftangriffen auf ihre Machtdemonstrationen.
Bei der Zielerfassung greifen die Kreml-Piloten laut FOCUS auf die syrische Luftbild-Aufklärung zurück. Zudem markierten russische Spezialeinheiten und Spione vor Ort strategisch wichtige Einrichtungen. Über die bei den Angriffen der alliierten und russischen Luftstreitkräfte getöteten Zivilisten gibt es in dem Geheim-Dokument keine Angaben.

State Sen. Richard H. Black, R-Loudoun, has traveled to Syria and promised support for the government of President Bashar Assad, who U.S. officials have repeatedly said has lost the legitimacy to rule the war-torn country.
His trip to a Middle Eastern country in the midst of a civil war and his comments in the face of official U.S. foreign policy are highly unusual for a state lawmaker.
Black is a part-time state senator who has no official role in foreign affairs.
Still, he has met with Assad government officials and said he would advocate for better relationships between Assad and the U.S., according to the official Syrian news agency.
“I will be Syria’s voice,” Black said, according to the news agency.

Black also was campaign co-chairman in Virginia for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination. An aide to Black said Wednesday evening that Black resigned as co-chairman shortly before his trip.
In a resignation letter dated April 21 that the aide provided to The Associated Press, Black said he was resigning to “avoid any possible distraction” related to his trip.
In the letter, Black said he was traveling to Syria “in an attempt to restore peace and prevent the slaughter of Christians and other minorities at the hands of the armies of terrorists rampaging across the country.”
Black recently was elected to serve as a Cruz-supporting Virginia delegate at the Republican National Committee’s convention this summer.
The Cruz campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment about Black’s trip to Syria. Cruz — unlike his GOP rivals — has been less than eager to use military force to take out the Assad government.
Black is one of the most vocal social conservatives in Virginia’s General Assembly, and has drawn national attention for his opposition to abortion and gay rights.
The Vietnam War veteran and former military lawyer dismayed Republican leaders in 2003 by sending fellow lawmakers small, plastic likenesses of a fetus to underscore his opposition to abortion.
The state senator raised eyebrows in 2014 when he sent a letter to Assad praising him. It was posted on the Syrian president’s Facebook page.
Black is expected to meet with Assad during his visit, the Syrian newspaper Al-Watan reported.
Syria’s conflict began with mostly peaceful protests in 2011, but a brutal government crackdown and the rise of an armed insurgency eventually plunged the country into a full-blown civil war. The fighting has killed more than 250,000 people, according to the United Nations, which stopped tracking casualties several months ago.
Black has said Assad protected Christians and fought terrorist groups. On his Twitter account, Black said he supported Assad because he is stemming the growth of the Islamic State group, sometimes called ISIS.
“If Assad falls, ISIS will secure Syria and march on Europe,” the tweet said.
Last year, Black said the Virginia Capitol Police alerted him to a threat against him by the Islamic State for his support of Assad. The state senator was featured in a magazine published by the Islamic state.
U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Black “is entitled to his views, but they do not reflect this administration’s policy on Syria.”
Black met with a Lebanese Christian politician allied with the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group, which is fighting alongside Assad’s forces in Syria, the TV news agency reported.
Both the Iranian news agency and the official Syrian news agency erroneously referred to Black as a U.S. senator.
Word of Black’s travels drew mockery from political opponents.
“Doesn’t surprise me one bit,” said Virginia Senate Minority Leader Richard L. Saslaw, D-Fairfax.
Saslaw added that Black shouldn’t be trying to meddle in foreign affairs and said Republicans “would be raising holy hell if the situation was reversed.”
