ALBANIA
FOREIGN DEBT CURRENTLY AT 3.3 BILLION EURO
Official data presented by the Central Bank of Albania shows that national foreign debt has grown with every passing year.
The last detailed report on Albanian foreign debt presented by the Bank shows that the total debt has grown 2.6 times since 2003, to 3.3 billion Euro at the end of 2009.
Of that total, one half is owed by the state and the other half is owed by the private sector.
Last year, the foreign debt amounted to 38.2% of the gross domestic product, compared to 25.1% in 2003.
If it continues to grow at this rate, Albania will soon reach the critical point.
On average, Albanian foreign debt grew 200 million Euro per year. In the last two years alone, it grew by 1.3 billion Euro.
The growth of the foreign debt is one of the main reason behind the idea of the Central Bank to open an national debate on current economic model in Albania.
