Une s'para postoj por sot pashe nje artikull qe me beri te shkruaj ketu.

Kisha shume respekt per Mjaft! por mesa shoh, s'eshte gje tjeter vetem nje organizate qe i sherben ambicieve personale te Erion Veliajt.

Mua nuk me behet vone se po kritikon qeverine, se c'do qeveri ne Shqiperi nje m*t eshte, por pse duhet qe te ekzagjeroje dhe ta publikoje kete gje ne nje botim te huaj. Edhe nqs se Shqiperia eshte vertet kaq keq sa c'e pershkruan ky, ku dolem ne me te keqijte ne Europe. Ku e harroi ky Bjellorusine apo Rusine apo Moldavine?

Une asnjehere nuk do te them qe ajo qe ndodhi ne 1997 ishte positive, por ama ky idioti na del me ide anti-shqiptare . Te gjithe e dime qe lufta ne Kosove e furnizua me arme nga Shqiperia dhe te gjithe e quajme ate dicka positive, pervec serbo-filit Veliaj. Sipas ketij lufta qe nisi ne Kosove ishte gje e keqe. Po pse re mendon ti se nqs lufta ne Kosove nuk do te kishte nisur atehere Kosova sot do ishte prane pavarsise? Kosova sot do te ishte njesoj sic ishte ne 1996 nqs s'do ishte kryengritur. Vetem nje anti-shqiptar mund te shkruaje gjera te tilla. Nqs s'do e kisha pare kush ishte autori, do te kisha qene i sigurte qe ndonje sllav a grek do e kishte shkruar kete. Dhe pastaj na thuhet qe Mjaft! eshte per mbrotjen e qytetareve shqiptare.

Kjo eshte tamam si puna e TopChannel dhe News24 qe "zbuluan" se Bushit ju vodh ora ne Fushe Kruje dhe qe turperuan te gjithe shqiptaret me ato reportazhe sensacionale. Sic tregojne pamjet filmike (plaku.com), oren Bushi e hoqi vete. Po lajmi u dha se i a vodhen dhe kujt po i behej vone se shqiptaret u pasqyruan si hajdute kur kjo s'ishte e vertete. Shqiptaret ja bejne vete gropen vetes.

This is not the first time Berisha has acted to curtail fundamental democratic freedoms in Albania. In the 1990s, he was our president (politicians in this part of the world don't retire -- they reincarnate) and he proved very adept at jailing his political opponents, shutting down newspapers and stacking the security services with party loyalists.

Back then, Washington viewed Albania as critical in its effort to contain the conflict in the former Yugoslavia by putting a lid on Albanian support for their restive brethren across the border in Kosovo. So long as Berisha did not fan the flames of nationalism, Washington turned a blind eye to his autocratic tendencies.

This policy came back to bite the United States, however, because Berisha's government became so corrupt and abusive, that it eventually imploded. Washington learned the hard way what the costs are of turning a blind eye to corruption and human rights abuses. America should be reminded of its past mistakes. We Albanians would be grateful if Washington would remember the principles and values that so many of us have come to admire about the United States of America.

As the author of the article, I felt compelled to write a brief response to your comments.

If i've learned one thing about living in the US, is how amercans'sense of self-criticism hsa been a driving force for progress. Sure, image repair for Albania is a dire need - i've felt it from the US, Africa and Latin America. But, as for any product, wrapping alone is not enough, there has to be some substance to selling this new image of Albania. Pumping patriotic horns simply doesn't cut it for the modern day and age.

I argue that Albanian's sentiments for the USA have nothing to do with the respective premiers, but are forged through a bond amongst peoples, and our historic gratitude to the US is far and beyond gestures of convenience between politicians. What's wrong there?

How does this hurt Kosova and national unity, i couldn't quite get it. Now, everybody does their share, and i believe we at MJAFT have done ours. Many of us worked with refugees at the border, helped the relief efforts in Kosova proper in 1999-2001, and are still working with civic movements there to attempt to accelerate the process of independence and keep Kosova intact. Which unity is this hurting? Shouldn't we in Albania fix things here first, before trying to 'export' our despotic regime elswehwere? My friends in Kosova who try to do politics would be doomed if Nano and Berisha were their role-models to follow in the new state.

I can't comment on UDB, communist, serbs, greeks and all that nonesense - the unfortunate thing about many of us Albanians is that we're too busy fighting with ghosts. Because, if you Mjolti truly cared about Greek violence, you should have joined one of the MJAFT protests in Tirana, Fier, London about the incident - or better even organize a protest yourself wherever you live, or call your congressman, or call to the Helsinki Committee in Congress. (where MJAFT has testified agains another appalling premier named Fatos Nano). Now, this would be patriotitc wouldn't it Mjolti? And yes Valerie, i too can't wait to be Mjaft-ed out, as I feel rather exhausted fighting it out with a few committed colleagues who left their cozy NY apartments to deal with the Berisha's and Nano's of Albania. But that would mean that, you Valerie, and others who disagree, actually DO return to Albania, and bring your better and brighter ideas, to not only boot us out, but most importantly to work on the ground so that fundamental rights are respected and concrete progress is achieved - only then will you have a good story to sell for Albania. And then, you may realize that shooting the messenger and cyber-nationalism may not quite be the most effective ways to generate change.
Last, my email erionveliaj@mjaft.org may be a better way to redirect hate speech and paranoia. This way we spare western readers from more nasty 'image of albania' rhetoric, where folks are vilified for standing up for any principle.
