Donald Trump calls for revolution after Obama is declared the winner
There were many people who were very upset about last nights victory for President Obama, and on the top of that list may have been reality television star and businessman Donald Trump. After the state of Ohio was called for President Obama, giving the President over 270 electoral votes for re-election, Trump sent out a number of furious tweets which explicitly called for a revolution against the government. Within minutes of Obama being declared the winner Trump tweeted the following messages out to over 1,800,000 followers.
We can't let this happen. We should march on Washington and stop this travesty. Our nation is totally divided!
Lets fight like hell and stop this great and disgusting injustice! The world is laughing at us.
This election is a total sham and a travesty. We are not a democracy!
Our country is now in serious and unprecedented trouble...like never before.
Trumps apparent argument was that President Obama should not be declared the winner because, at the time, he was losing the popular vote count against Romney.
There are two main problems with Trumps argument.
First, Trump sent his tweets before the results from California, Oregon, and Washington. Obama won those large states by large margins, and it put Obama ahead in the popular vote count. Obama currently leads the Electoral College vote count by a 303-206 margin, and the popular vote count by two point margin (50 percent to 48 percent)
Secondly, the United States Constitution explicitly makes the Electoral College the decider in presidential elections, not the popular vote. Trump and his conservative brethren can try and change that system, but it would actually benefit Democrats if they did since the dense population centers of America tend to vote Democratic. In addition, Republicans did not seem to have any complaints about the Electoral College when President Bush won the 2000 presidential election despite losing the popular vote.
