Half an hour


I never had you, nor will I ever have you
I suppose. A few words, an approach
as in the bar yesterday, and nothing more.
It is, undeniably, a pity. But we who serve Art
sometimes with intensity of mind, and of course only
for a short while, we create pleasure
which almost seems real.
So in the bar the day before yesterday -- the merciful alcohol
was also helping much --
I had a perfectly erotic half-hour.
And it seems to me that you understood,
and stayed somewhat longer on purpose.
This was very necessary. Because
for all the imagination and the wizard alcohol,
I needed to see your lips as well,
I needed to have your body close.

Μισή ώρα

Μήτε σε απέκτησα, μήτε θα σε αποκτήσω
ποτέ, θαρρώ. Μερικά λόγια, ένα πλησίασμα
όπως στο μπαρ προχθές, και τίποτε άλλο.
Είναι, δεν λέγω, λύπη. Αλλά εμείς της Τέχνης
κάποτε μ'έντασι του νού, και βέβαια μόνο
για λίγην ώρα, δημιουργούμεν ηδονήν
η οποία σχεδόν σαν υλική φαντάζει.
Ετσι στο μπαρ προχθές -- βοηθώντας κιόλας
πολύ ο ευσπλαχνικός αλκολισμός --
είχα μισή ώρα τέλεια ερωτική.
Και το κατάλαβες με φαίνεται,
κ'έμεινες κάτι περισσότερον επίτηδες.
Ηταν πολλή ανάγκη αυτό. Γιατί
μ'όλην την φαντασία, και με το μάγο οινόπνευμα,
χρειάζονταν να βλέπω και τα χείλη σου,
χρειάζονταν να'ναι το σώμα σου κοντά.

Even if you cannot shape your life as you want it,
at least try this
as much as you can; do not debase it
in excessive contact with the world,
in the excessive movements and talk.

Do not debase it by taking it,

Οσο μπορείς

Κι αν δεν μπορείς να κάμεις την ζωή σου όπως την θέλεις,
τούτο προσπάθησε τουλάχιστον
όσο μπορείς: μην την εξευτελίζεις
μες στην πολλή συνάφεια του κόσμου,
μες στες πολλές κινήσεις κι ομιλίες.

Μην την εξευτελίζεις πιαίνοντάς την,
γυρίζοντας συχνά κ' εκθέτοντάς την
στων σχέσεων και των συναναστροφών
την καθημερινή ανοησία,
ως που vα γίνει σα μιά ξένη φορτική.

Constantine P. Cavafy
(1863 - 1933)
Cavafy, one of the most prominent Greek poets, was born on April 29, 1863 and died on the same date in 1933 in Alexandria (Egypt). Here's a short biographical note by the poet himself:


I am from Constantinople by descent, but I was born in Alexandria -- at a house on Seriph Street; I left very young, and spent much of my childhood in England. Subsequently I visited this country as an adult, but for a short period of time. I have also lived in France. During my adolescence I lived over two years in Constantinople. It has been many years since I last visited Greece.
My last employment was as a clerk at a government office under the Ministry of Public Works of Egypt. I know English, French, and a little Italian.
