Air

The French duo Air gained inclusion into the late-'90s electronica surge due chiefly to the labels their recordings appeared on, not the actual music they produced. Their sound, a variant of the classic disco sound coaxed into a relaxing prozac vision of the late '70s, looked back to a variety of phenomena from the period -- synthesizer maestros Tomita, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Vangelis , new wave music of the non-spikey variety, and obscure Italian film soundtracks.

The presence of several female vocalists, an equipment list whose number of pieces stretched into the dozens and a baroque tuba solo on one track; all of this conspired to make Air more of a happening in the living room than the dancefloor.

Dunckel and Godin became Air by 1995. During 1996-97, the duo released singles on Britain's Mo' Wax ("Modular") and the domestic Source label ("Casanova 70," "Le Soleil Est Prés de Moi"). Though Air often evinced the same '60s Continental charm as Dimitri from Paris -- due no doubt to the influence of Serge Gainsbourg -- the duo had little in common musically with other acts (Daft Punk), in the wave of French electronica lapping at the shores of Britain and
America during 1997. That same year, Air remixed Depeche Mode and Neneh Cherry. Signed to Virgin, Air released their debut album Moon Safari in early 1998. The singles "Sexy Boy" and "Kelly Watch the Stars" became moderate hits in Britain, and earned airplay on MTV. Their early singles were collected in 1999 under the title Premiers Symptomes; the duo's soundtrack to the Sofia Coppola film The Virgin Suicides followed in early 2000. Air's second studio effort, 10,000 Hz Legend , appeared in spring 2001 with a subsequent tour of the U.S., but critics and fans alike didn't appreciate the darker, more experimental direction. They bridged the gap between the pop of Moon Safari and the experimentalism of 10,000 Hz Legend with their 2004 release,
Talkie Walkie.

Moon Safari , a thoroughly appealing, otherworldly debut album from Air. Where most of their dance contemporaries push the boundaries of trip-hop or jungle, Air blends Euro-dance with new wave. Any futuristic element on their album feels strangely outdated, since they're borrowed from the early '80s, which gives their music an odd, out-of-time feeling. The waves of gurgling synths beneath the spacious, colorful chords and melodies give the impression that the music is floating in space. For all the atmospherics and layers of synths, there's a distinct pop sense to Moon Safari that makes it accessible and damn near irresistible.

DJ Shadow

DJ Shadow's Josh Davis is widely credited as a key figure in developing the experimental instrumental hip-hop style associated with the London-based Mo' Wax label. His early singles for the label, including "In/Flux" and "Lost and Found (S.F.L.)," were all-over-the-map ini-masterpieces combining elements of funk, rock, hip-hop, ambient, jazz, soul, and used-bin incidentalia.
He worked his way through hip-hop's early years into the heyday of crews like Eric B. & Rakim,Ultramagnetic, and Public Enemy; groups which prominently featured DJs in their ranks. His tracks spread widely through the DJ-strong hip-hop underground, eventually catching the attention of Mo' Wax. Shadow's first full-length, Endtroducing..., was released in late 1996 to immense critical acclaim in Britain and America. Preemptive Strike, a compilation of early
singles, followed in early 1998. Later that year, Shadow produced tracks for the debut album by U.N.K.L.E.( Shadow & Lavelle ), a long-time Mo' Wax production team that gained superstar guests including Thom Yorke (of Radiohead), Richard Ashcroft (of the Verve), Mike D (of the Beastie Boys ), and others. His next project came in 1999, with the transformation of Solesides into a new label, Quannum Projects. Nearly six years after his debut production album, the proper follow-up, The Private Press, was released in June 2002.

Fila Brazillia

Hull-based duo Fila Brazillia are the most popular and acclaimed of the noted Pork Recordings stable. Formed in 1991 by producers Steve Cobby and Dave McSherry, their first single, Mermaids, was released the same year gaining instant acclaim among DJs and headphonauts alike for its innovative fusion of funk, dub, house, hip-hop, and acid jazz.The group followed their debut single with a string of full-length releases (Old Codes, New Chaos, Maim That Tune and Black Market Gardening among them) which were instrumental in building Pork's reputation as one of the most consistent and respected of England's vast ocean of underground breakbeat/trip-hop labels. More recent releases have integrated elements of pop and drum'n'bass on a number of tracks. Fila's rep has also translated into a number of acclaimed remixes, including Lamb's "Cotton Wool," The Orb's "Toxygene," and DJ Food's "Freedom" (over a dozen of which were featured on a 2000 collection Brazilification.) The mix album Another Late Night appeared in 2001, and the studio effort Jump Leads appeared early the following year.

Fila Brazillia are one of the finest purveyors of downtempo music in the UK. Keeping a fairly low key approach to advertising they let their music do the talking.The result is a massive back catalogue of albums which always prove funky and cool.

The pioneering force behind the rise of trip-hop, Massive Attack were among the most innovative and influential groups of their generation; their hypnotic sound : a darkly sensual and cinematic fusion of hip-hop rhythms, soulful melodies, dub grooves, and choice samples -- set the pace for much of the dance music to emerge throughout the 1990s, paving the way for such acclaimed artists as Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, Beth Orton, and Tricky, himself a Massive Attack alumnus.Their history dates back to 1983 and the formation of the Wild Bunch , one of the earliest and most successful sound-system/DJ collectives to arrive on the U.K. music scene; renowned for their seamless integration of a wide range of musical styles, from punk to reggae to R&B.

The group's first single, "Daydreaming" appeared in 1990; it featured the sultry vocals of singer Shara Nelson and raps by Tricky, another onetime Wild Bunch collaborator. The classic "Unfinished Sympathy" followed, as did another compelling effort : "Safe From Harm". Finally, in 1991, Massive Attack issued their debut LP, Blue Lines ; while by no means a huge commercial success, the record was met with major critical praise, and was dubbed an instant classic in many quarters.

During the '90s Gulf War, they changed their name to "Massive" in order to show their dissaproval for UN's policy towards Iraq. Probably one among many reasons for the disastrous US tour being their active engagement in worldwide politics. After that tour, many considered the band as de facto finished.

Nevertheless, after a three-year layoff, Massive Attack (their full name now properly reinstated) resurfaced with Protection; again working with Hooper and Tricky, they also brought into the fold vocalist Nicolette, as well as Everything but the Girl's Tracey Thorn . Three singles, "Karmacoma", "Sly", "Protection" --were released from the LP, which was also remixed in its entirety by Mad Professor and issued as their next album,No Protection. After a successfull tour they made remixes to names as Garbage, Madonna etc. It was at Glastonbury music festival that they first gave samples of their to-come album, performing "Risingson". Mezzanine became a cult hit among critics, clubs, and the college crowds, spinning successful singles such as "Teardrop" and "Inertia Creeps". In February 2003, after a five-year wait, Massive Attack released their fourth album, 100th Window, including collaborations with mainstay Horace Andy as well as Sinéad O'Connor.
