Boards of Canada

Boards of Canada is the duo of Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin. Based on the northern coast of Scotland, the group got their start on acclaimed experimental electronica after recording an obscene number of tracks and pressing the best of them up as a 12-inch, Twoism.The pair's first official release appeared on Skam toward the middle of 1996, and was quickly hailed as among the label's finest releases to date. Although Boards of Canada's blueprint for electronic listening music; aching electro-synth with midtempo hip-hop beats and occasional light scratching isn't quite a revolution in and of itself, Music Has the Right to Children is an amazing LP. the duo is one of the few European artists which can match their American precursors with regard to a sense of spirit in otherwise electronic music. This is pure machine soul, reminiscent of some forgotten Japanese animation
soundtrack or a rusting Commodore 64 just about to give up the ghost.

Boards of Canada specialize in evocative, mournful, sample-laden downtempo music often sounding as though produced on malfunctioning equipment excavated from the ruins of an early-'70s computer lab. Geogaddi has a bit less in the way of melodics sounds slightly less like trip-hop for fairy tales and more like the slightly experimental, but definitely produced, electronic music it is. It's clear Boards of Canada labored long to create Geogaddi, since only a tremendous amount of work can produce music that flows so naturally and unobtrusively that it never sounds produced.

Kruder & Dorfmeister

The trip-hop production duo of Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister has gained more fame for its stellar remixes and DJ sets than as producers of its own work. Their remixes of well known names such as William Orbit, David Holmes, Bomb the bass, United future organisation etc, made the duo one of the most respected names in the electronic/dance community.
The Viennese duo's standing increased with the issue of one of the most acclaimed 1996 DJ Kicks for Belgium's Stud!o K7. After forming their own G-Stone Records, they released the G-Stoned EP in mid-1996. Though they remained busy with remix work and DJ gigs during 1997, it wasn't until late 1998 that another release appeared, The Kruder & Dorfmeister Sessions (aka K&D sess) . Dorfmeister also appears in the side-project Tosca(..Honey ) with Rupert Huber, while Kruder released an album on G-Stoned in 1999 as Peace Orchestra..

While Kruder & Dorfmeister remained unwilling to release a "proper" album even several years after their breakout, The K&D Sessions is proof positive they're still doing what they do best -- making the most blissfully blunted music the world has ever heard. The two-disc set is first and foremost a K&D mix album, to add to the two they'd already released. It's also a remix collection, though; each of the 21 tracks are reworkings (by Kruder, Dorfmeister, or both) for artists including Roni Size, Lamb, Bomb the Bass, Depeche Mode, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Sofa Surfers, and Count Basic. As could be expected, The K&D Sessions is earthy, downtempo and acid-based, even moreso than previous mix albums by the pair. The pinging vocal samples that echo through the duo's remix of "Bug Powder Dust" by Bomb the Bass prove amply that Kruder & Dorfmeister have a better handle on 21st-century dub techniques than any other producers out there, and the impossibly deep beats on almost every track simply couldn't have been recorded by any other act.
Yes, it's a bit of a shame that the pair still hadn't released an album of own-productions, but with (re)mix albums this stunning and accomplished, Kruder & Dorfmeister hardly needed one to gain respect.

Howie B doesn't go for the electro gusto and channels his energy into outward bound gear, seeking the organic, the international, the mysterious and the mental. Fans of the cozy Howie B will dig the hell out of "Making Love on Your Side," the album's opening track, with it's glistening, noir-ish gypsy blues ambience, or the over-the-edge desperate love song with Robbie Robertson on"All This Means to Me". This is a confusing little record to be sure but it's also compelling enough to make you listen a dozen times just tosee if you can nail it down.

Howie B's Another Late Night was the second entry in the popular series Another Late Night. It (and Fila Brazillia 's entry) reflects a more eclectic approach to chillout that often leads to a less-unified album. Howie B's Another Late Night might not be quite the jazzy, down-tempo chillout disc some expect. It does, however, revel in its diversity and, as such, does a great job highlighting tracks not commonly associated with this subgenre. Another solid volume of the series, but likely to be one of the least popular to those who strictly interpret electronica. Definitely worth a listen.
