What Mel's Passion Will Earn Him

NEW YORK - Mel Gibson stands to personally make more than $300 million for pursuing his Passion.

At the close of its fifth day in theaters, the controversial The Passion of the Christ movie officially grossed $125.2 million, and industry experts anticipate that the international box office sales could hit $650 million by the end of its run. That's the third-best five-day opening ever, behind Time Warner's (nyse: TWX - news - people ) Matrix Reloaded and Sony's (nyse: SNE - news - people ) Spider-Man, beating out blockbusters like Academy Award darling Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Walt Disney Co.'s (nyse: DIS - news - people ) Finding Nemo.

Gibson and his Icon Productions outfit provided the film's sole backing, spending about $30 million on production costs and an estimated $15 million on what have been exceptionally successful marketing and advertising efforts. Those costs already have been covered--a feat in and of itself. "That's a lot more than most movies do. Most don't break even with just domestic distribution." says BoxOfficeMojo.com President Brandon Gray. "Normally they need international box office, and rental and sales income from DVDs and video [to do that]."

The early box office numbers suggest that Passion could rake in $350 million in the U.S. and Canada, and possibly another $300 million internationally, depending upon the kind of distribution it gets overseas. Assuming Gibson has typical arrangements with theaters and his distributor, Newmarket Films, he should personally pocket 40% to 50% of that $650 million gross.

Gibson also gets a cut of the sales of Passion merchandise, including mugs and nail pendants, which could really add up: The Christian retail market is worth an estimated $4.2 billion. Licensing deals vary widely, but studios--in this case Gibson's company--generally get between 9% and 15% of the products' wholesale values. Critics have questioned how tasteful it is to peddle replicas of the nails used to affix Christ to the cross. But Motive Entertainment President Paul Lauer, who headed up the movie's marketing efforts, says he's teamed up with Christian retailing veterans.

Next is the film's release on DVD and video, expected sometime this summer, by Fox Entertainment (nyse: FOX - news - people ). On the basis of box office sales thus far, Alexander & Associates media research outfit principle Bob Alexander estimates that at least 8 million copies of the film will be sold. Translation: roughly another $75 million for Mel. "The wild card with this movie is that this is not just entertainment, it's a religious experience for people," says Alexander. He thinks people will be more inclined to buy such a movie as a gift, and expects that religious organizations will buy it in bulk.

Mel Gibson fell off of the Forbes Celebrity 100 list in 2003, after making the cut in both 2002 and 2001. But he's sure to have that stature restored, thanks to the piles of money that this movie stands to make and the copious press coverage that it's received.

Ne fund te fundit , duam apo nuk duam ne (apo cifutet) shijojme filmin (qofte edhe me lot) apo merzitemi se po fiton Mel Gibson, ai eshte krejt ndryshe nga filmat e tjere per Jesusin, dhe eshte krejt e vertete historia qe pasqyron. Por ka dale ne mode (sidomos pas cifiteve dhe per cifutet) jashte mode te respektohet e verteta . Cifutet kane pare te verteten prandja jane trembur kaq shume e merzitur e po bejn gam gam.
Pastaj nuk e di c'te keqe transmeton ky film, ose c'mesazh ?
Une mendoj se aktori mel gibson nuk firmosi fundin e tij, por perjetesimin. (ne fushen e artit e te historise te gershetuara bashke)jo te besimit apo te luftes midis rracave apo feve.
Ne fimin e tij , ai nuk perciell asnje mesazh dhe duket se nuk ka pase aspak per qellim kete lufte qe po thashethemnohet nga lufte nxitesit, perkundrazi, qellimi i tij ka qene paqja dhe dashuria. Nuk eshte faji i mel Gibsonit, as i Jesusit, pse ishte ai qe ishte, dhe e kryqezuan ashtu sic e kryqezuan (madje sine film) pikerisht me gjithe ate gjak qe shumica e diskutanteve pohon se i eshte dukur shume dhe i pabesueshem. Te qe e pavertete ajo qe ndodhi edhe ne film nuk do te permdnej tash me shume se dymije vjet tortura e krishtit , dhe gjaku i tyre. Kinomatografikisht, perderisa filmi ka ngjallur kaq shume emocione , e lot nuk ka si te thuash se nuk ishte edhe i bukur. Ne po shohim filma me vampire e me te llahtarshem se ky per te cilin po u dhombsen kaq shume lotet e shikuesve, po askush nuk ankohet, e askush nuk i kercenon prodhuesit e tyre, pse duhet te behet kjo per kete film?

Shkoni te shikoni filmin e lexoni emocionet , te merrni mesazhin e mire qe perciell filmi, dhe detajet qe ia vlen t'i dim... e mos lexoni gazetat te cilat dhe sidomos gazetat nuk po bejne asgje , pervecse po e shfrytezojne suksesin e filmit e po stersgjasin thashethemet qe te shiten. S'ka rendesi se sa here e shikoj gjithmone eshte filmi me prekes qe kam pare. Por meqe tema eshte hapur per realizimin e filmit; bie dakort me Kolombin e pash kete film dije dhe nuk harrija ti mbaja syt drejte ose koken pa e perulur. SHUME GJAK. Shume Grafik. Si tha R2T ngjante me nje film horror por ama me PELQEU! Pse? Sepse eshte film i vertete, na pelqen apo jo sic tha Dreri njerezit atehere ishin nje shkalle mbi kafshet. Tortura te tilla ne zemra mbushur plot urrejtje ekzistonin. Dhe sot ato skena te llahtarshme nga filmi me vin ne mendje.

Wrong! be careful when analyzing data Larsus esp as to the source where it comes from. I wonder if the writer's last name ends in stein.

it's less than a 50% drop
"dropped at most theaters" can be interpreted in various ways, such as dropped by 50% in 51% of theaters (most) and increased by 100% in 49% of theaters, which still fits perfectly to the writer's statement.
