1974 World Cup Final - West Germany 2-1 Netherlands

The seemingly invincible, Johan Cruyff-inspired Dutch swept to the final on the back of a enticing blend of 'total' football and bare-faced arrogance and they looked destined to crown their dominance by beating the Germans in the two sides' first official meeting since World War II.

Neeskens' first-minute penalty - won by Cruyff - set the Dutch on their way, but more concerned with humiliating their opponents, de Oranje failed to kill the game and Breitner equalised from a controversial penalty, before Gerd Müller scored the win a minute before half-time.

Johnny Rep: It's a good example of Dutch arrogance. We were really thinking about humiliating the Germans. But you should never try to do that to them."

Wim van Hanegem: "I didn't care about the score; 1-0 was enough as long as we humiliated them. I don't like the Germans. It's because of the war. They killed 80% of my family. My father, my sister, two of my brothers. Each time I played the Germans, I got angry."

Euro 1980 - Group game: West Germany 3-2 Netherlands

If the game was won for Germany by Klaus Allofs' hat-trick, the battle on the field was level on points. Nationalmannschaft keeper Schumacher's headbutt on Stevens 'equalised' by Rene van der Kerkhof's punch into Bernd Schuster's eye.

Horst Hrubesch: "My man-marker didn't stop spitting on me and scratching me. He even called me a w**ker."

Karl-Heinz Förster: "Before the match, we thought it would be tense. We even swore we would beat the Dutch as it was vital for us in terms of pride. We know what it means to them. There's nothing more enjoyable for them to beat us. They have more hate for us than we have for them."

Euro 1988 - Semi-final: Netherlands 2-1 West Germany

A tense game where one dubious penalty - slotted home by Ronald Koeman - was cancelled out by another - fired in by Matthaüs. The two sides finally seperated by Marco van Basten, delivering the killer blow and giving the Dutch the supreme satisfaction of knocking the Germans out in their own backyard.

But the lasting unsavoury image of the contest comes from the post-match 'celebrations' where Koeman, having exchanged shirts with Olaf Thon, then preceded to mime wiping his backside with the German's shirt in front of a 61,000 crowd.

Ronald Koeman: "What happened after the game was regrettable. It was an impulsive reaction. That sort of thing follows you your whole life. But for me, it's a closed matter."

Hans van Breukelen: "I had waited for this moment since 1974. Before the match, I thought back to what I had felt as a teenager in front of my television and worked up my rage. I'm happy that we made the old generation - that which knew the war - happy."

Arnold Muhren: "We humiliated them in front of their own support. To do that at my age, you can't put a price on that."

1990 World Cup - Second round: West Germany 2-1 Netherlands

The shameful drowning out of each other's anthem prior to kick-off was the pre-cursor to the most tense meeting between the two in their turbulent history.

With over-the-top tackles de rigeur, the game explodes just before half-time.

Völler throws himself dramatically to the floor as he clashes with Rijkaard, conning the referee into giving the Dutchman a yellow card.

Rijkaard, furious, spits at Völler and grabs his hair, an altercation follows which earns the German a booking.

The German then got involved with Dutch keeper van Breukelen, provoking Rijkaard to spit on him again. A fight almost breaks out, both are sent off.

But as the two go off, Rijkaard spits on the German forward again, before the pair have to be seperated in the tunnel.

Frank Rijkaard: "I let myself get carried away by the situation when I saw the red card against me. I've spoken to Rudi since and apologised. He accepted my apologies, which made me happy."

Rudi Völler: "Today, Frank and I have made up, even though it took some time to get over this incident."

Germany team manager Rudi Voeller resigned on Thursday after the three-time European champions dropped out of EURO 2004. "After long consideration, I have decided to step down," an emotional Voeller told a press conference in Almancil the day after his side were eliminated at the group stage following a 2-1 defeat by the Czech Republic.
"I did not take this decision immediately after the match. But I had thought about stepping down before," he added. Voeller, 44, had said after the match that he wanted to stay on as coach and see out his contract which ran until the 2006 World Cup in his homeland but he opted to step down after reflecting on his team's poor performances. "I would have loved to have guided Germany to the World Cup but I am not the right man," said the former international striker. "I would never cling to my job if results were poor. "My successor now has two years to build a team and I am sure we will have a good side for 2006."

The president of the German football federation, Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, said: "We regret this decision but we respect it." Voeller's assistant Michael Skibbe will also leave his post but stay on as co-ordinator of the youth set-up.

Germany drew two of their matches and lost one in Portugal, scoring just two goals in total and finished third in Group D behind the Czechs and the Netherlands, who beat Latvia 3-0 on Thursday to book their place in the quarter-finals. Draws against the Dutch and tournament debutants Latvia left the Germans needing to beat the already-qualified Czechs to qualify for the last eight.

Voeller took over as coach from Erich Ribbeck following an unsatsifactory EURO 2000, when Germany failed to win a match, although he was initially only supposed to stay for a year. "The one year turned into four and German football owes a lot to Voeller," Mayer Vorfelder said. His finest hour came when he guided the Germans to the 2002 World Cup final in which they 2-0 lost to Brazil. "These four years have been great for me," Voller said. "Almost winning the World Cup was a real highlight."
