    Dear Michael,
As a person who is originally from Worcester, you know how hard our Community has worked to maintain a vibrant, growing Albanian Orthodox Christian Community in Central Massachusetts.

We constantly look towards the future, but we do so while honoring our past. Metropolitan Noli stated , “That while Boston maybe the head of the Archdiocese, Worcester is it’s heart!” Many of us here believe that we are currently at a cross road in our history. It appears that we have history repeating itself with the passing of Bishop Nikon. When Metropolit an Noli died, it left a void. That void eventually created a terrible rift in our community. We absolutely do not want to have a rift again. The best way to prevent that is to have an open, self examination of the future direction of our Archdiocese. This should be a pre-requisite before voting on any candidate for Bishop. This really should have been done soon after Bishop Nikon’s passing, but it wasn’t. So, now is our opportunity to examine which road we should go down for the future of our Archdiocese.

Since 1971, we have been part of a self governing Archdiocese within the Orthodox Church in America. This came about due to the leadership vacuum after Metropolitan Noli’s death in1965, the infighting that followed as to who should be our legitimate Bishop, and the destruction of the Orthodox Church of Albania in 1967. We no longer had new families or clergy coming to America. Our joining the OCA was out of necessity; it was actually for both sides. It gave Bishop Stephen Lasko legitimacy. It gave added legitimacy to the OCA in their quest to lead an “American” Orthodox Church. This partnership is now over 50 years old. The circumstances of today are not as they were in 1971. Both organizations are facing new and different challenges . The OCA has not become the over arching leader of the Church in America and unlike in 1971, there are now tens of thousands of Albanians living in America, more than at any time in our history. Our parish council is completely made up of men and women who immigrated here from Albania since the fall of communism. We are very fortunate as these people have breathed new life into our Church, and let’s not forget that they and their children are now Americans too! Conversely, we have many parishes that are shrinking as they are located in small, more rural areas with no major immigration boosts. What do we do to promote growth? How can we help our smaller struggling parishes?

In theory, our parishes in cities like NYC, Philadelphia, Detroit , Boston should also be seeing an influx of new Americans from Albania and growing. Are they? If not, why? We know that there are other regions with recent arrivals that have expressed an interest in exploring opening Albanian Orthodox missions. Places like in Waterbury, Toronto, Montreal and Florida. Are we looking at expanding, if not, why? Anecdotally, these people don’t appear to be joining the local OCA parishes in their cities, why? These are just but a few of the hard questions that need to be asked.

Some people probably question, why do we care so much about an Albanian Orthodox Church : we live in America, right? The answer is because we stayed true to our faith in the face of wars, occupation, communism and immigration. Our ancestors defended Christianity and stopped the Turks from completely taking over Christendom. Now, 550 years later, there are still Albanian Eastern Rite Eparchies in Italy and Sicily. In late 19th and early 20th century, after keeping our faith under 500 years of Islamic rule, we were told by other Orthodox people that we weren’t Christians because we were Albanian. In our ancestral homeland we couldn’t even use Albanian in the liturgy. Several priests from our own Archdiocese were murdered there because they dared to use Albanian in the liturgy. Then many of us, alive today, were faced with the utter calamity of Albania becoming the world’s first atheistic state. Many of our parishioners, our friends and family members were persecuted by the Communists because they believed in Our Savior Jesus Christ. Thankfully, the Church there has just celebrated the 30th anniversary of it’s resurrection! This is why we fight tenaciously to preserve what we have. We are not just an “ethnic club”, we are Eastern Orthodox Christians who happen to be Albanian by ethnicity and American by choice or birth. Our culture of “Besa” requires us to welcome people to our home, and we have welcomed many non-Albanians to our fold. It is clear that our focus on the Albanian part of our identity is not just nostalgia for the past, but a central part of reinforcing and supporting our Orthodox faith in the future.

We are only asking for the same respect shown to the larger Orthodox groups . We have been part of the mosaic of American Orthodoxy for close to 120 years. As the Church in America faces great changes in societal norms, demographics, the lack of religiosity in young people, along with the terrible impact Covid has had on many parishes across the country, we just want to be making our own decisions for our future, whatever that may be. The time has come for that self examination. As the Lay- Vice Chairman, you should consider establishing a “blue ribbon commission” whose task would be to meet with our various communities to better understand their needs, research various options regarding our organizational structure, and eventually come back to the Parishes with a plan that makes sense for our future. As part of any overall future plan, we ask that you open a dialogue with our brothers and sisters of the Albanian Orthodox Diocese of America in order to find a way to reunite them with our Archdiocese. This tragic family split has gone on much too long. Only through a thoughtful examination of all ideas and options, and asking for the Lord’s assistance, can we choose the right path for all of us.

Sincerely the past Chairpersons of St. Mary’s Assumption Albanian Parish Council,

    I dashur Michael,

Mitropoliti Noli tha: “Nse Bostoni sht kreu i Kryedioqezs, Worcester sht zemra e saj!” Shum prej nesh ktu besojm se aktualisht jemi n nj udhkryq n historin ton. Duket se kemi histori q prsritet me vdekjen e peshkopit Nikon. Kur vdiq Mitropoliti Fan Noli, la boshllk. Ai boshllk m n fund krijoi nj prarje t tmerrshme n komunitetin ton. Ne absolutisht nuk duam t kemi nj prarje prsri. Mnyra m e mir pr ta parandaluar kt sht q t kemi nj shqyrtim t hapur, vet-shqyrtim t drejtimit t ardhshm t Kryepeshkopats son. Kjo duhet t jet nj parakusht prpara se t votohet pr cilindo kandidat pr peshkop.

Ajo i dha legjitimitet peshkopit Stefan Lasko. Ai i dha legjitimitet t shtuar OCA-s n prpjekjen e saj pr t udhhequr nj kish orthodhokse "amerikane". Si mund t'i ndihmojm famullit tona m t vogla n vshtirsi? Jemi shum me fat pasi kta njerz i kan dhn jet kishs son dhe t mos harrojm se edhe ata dhe fmijt e tyre tani jan amerikan!

Teorikisht, famullit tona n qytete si NYC, Filadelfia, Detroit, Boston gjithashtu duhet t shohin nj fluks t amerikanve t rinj nga Shqipria dhe n rritje. A po rriten? Nse jo, pse? Ne e dim se ka rajone t tjera me ardhje t fundit q kan shprehur interes pr t eksploruar hapjen e misioneve orthodhokse shqiptare. Kto jan vetm disa nga pyetjet e vshtira q duhen br.

Disa njerz ndoshta pyesin, pse ne kujdesemi kaq shum pr nj kish orthodhokse shqiptare: jetojm n Amerik, apo jo? Prgjigja sht sepse ne i qndruam besnik besimit ton prball luftrave, pushtimit, komunizmit dhe emigracionit. Paraardhsit tan e mbrojtn krishterimin dhe i ndaluan turqit t pushtonin plotsisht t ashtuquajturin krishterim. Tani, 550 vjet m von, ekzistojn ende Eparkit e Ritit Lindor Shqiptar n Itali dhe Siili. N fund t shekullit t 19-t dhe n fillim t shekullit t 20-t, pasi e mbajtm besimin ton nn 500 vjet sundim islamik, nga t tjer orthodhoks na than se nuk ishim t krishter sepse ishim shqiptar. N vendlindjen ton strgjyshore nuk mund t prdornim as shqipen n liturgji. Aty u vran disa priftrinj nga vet kryepeshkopata jon, sepse guxuan t prdornin shqip n liturgji. Ather shum prej nesh, t gjall sot, u prballn me fatkeqsin e plot t Shqipris duke u br shteti i par ateist n bot. Kjo sht arsyeja pse ne luftojm me kmbngulje pr t ruajtur at q kemi.

Ne krkojm vetm t njjtin respekt t treguar ndaj grupeve m t mdha orthodhokse. Ne jemi pjes e mozaikut t Orthodhoksis Amerikane prej afro 120 vitesh. Ndrsa Kisha n Amerik prballet me ndryshime t mdha n normat shoqrore, demografike, mungesn e fes tek t rinjt, s bashku me ndikimin e tmerrshm q Covid ka pasur n shum famulli n t gjith vendin, ne thjesht duam t marrim vendimet tona pr t ardhmen ton. fardo q t jet. Ka ardhur koha pr at vetkontroll. Si Zvends Kryetar Laik, ju duhet t konsideroni krijimin e nj "komisioni t shiritit blu" detyra e t cilit do t ishte t takohej me komunitetet tona t ndryshme pr t kuptuar m mir nevojat e tyre, t hulumtoni opsione t ndryshme n lidhje me strukturn ton organizative dhe prfundimisht t ktheheni n famulli me nj plan q ka kuptim pr t ardhmen ton.

Sinqerisht Kryetart e kaluar t Kshillit t Famullis Shqiptare t Shn Mris,

Background pertinent to the discussion of the future of the Albanian Orthodox Churches in America.

The Albanian Orthodox parishes in North America long operated as a loosely-affiliated grouping of
independent communities using a common liturgical language. This period lasted from 1908 through
1949. Each community had a founding date sometimes with many years between that founding date
and the establishment of regular liturgical services. Some clergy immigrated having already been
ordained while others were ordained by local bishops in North America:

    1908 St. George, Boston, MA

    1911 St. Elia, Jamestown, NY

    1912 St. Nicholas, Southbridge, MA

1915 St. Mary’s Dormition, Worcester, MA

1915 St. Peter and St. Paul, Philadelphia, PA

    1919 Annunciation, Natick, MA

1919 St. Dimitri, St. Louis, MO

1921 Holy Trinity, South Boston, MA

    1925 St. George, Bridgeport, MA

    1929 St. Thomas, Detroit, MI

1930 St. John Chrysostom, Philadelphia, PA

1936 St. John the Baptist, Somerville, MA

1938 St. e Premte, Cleveland, OH

    1941 St. Nicholas, Manhattan, NY

    1944 St. Nicholas, Chicago, IL

1958 St. Peter and St. Paul, Rochester, NY

    2003 St. Astius, Toronto, ON

2003 All Saints of Albania, Montreal, QB

2017 St. Nicholas Orthodox Academy, Reno, NV

The first community was led by Theophan Noli commencing in 1908. By 1919, with a Bachelor’s degree
from Harvard, he had been elevated to the rank of Archimandrite and nominated by his parishioners
and the local Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church in America for elevation to bishop for the purpose
of organizing the Albanian Orthodox parishes into a single diocese. The nomination by the local synod
to the Synod in Moscow was received during the midst of the Russian Civil War and no action was ever
taken on it. In an act which led to a permanent rupture with the majority of the Albanian priests in
America, Rev. Theophan crowned himself as Bishop of Boston and proceeded to the Versailles Treaty
negotiations with the purpose of securing the territorial integrity of the borders for Albania. With U.S. President Woodrow Wilson of a similar mind, much of the area inhabited by Albanians was secured into
the newly-independent state (after nearly 500 years of Ottoman Turkish rule).

From there, Bishop Theophan (Noli) entered Albanian politics as a western-educated cleric while
simultaneously being elevated to Archbishop of Durres by the self-declared (in 1922) Autocephalous
Orthodox Church of Albania. He served briefly as Foreign Minister and Prime Minister before fleeing to
Italy and later Austria and Germany in 1925. He remained in Europe in undisclosed circumstances but
was active with the Comintern and made at least one trip to Moscow in 1929 where he broadly praised
    the Soviet Union.

Bishop Noli did not return to the USA until 1932. Five new parishes had been established in his absence.
However, as he had been consecrated for the see of Durres, he could not gain canonical recognition as
Bishop of Boston, the title he continued to use.

The current Albanian Orthodox Archdiocese in America was not incorporated as an ecclesial body until
the late 1940s in the context of the Cold War, when a substantial portion of the laity petitioned the
Archbishop of Constantinople or Ecumenical Patriarch (EcuPat) to send a canonical Orthodox bishop for
the Albanians in the Americas. Traditionally and according to the sacred Canons, the Ecumenical
Patriarch normally took the lead in organizing the church in territories where no autocephalous church
had yet been established. The petition was answered by Patriarch Athenagoras who sent Bishop Mark
(Lipa) in 1950 and incorporated the Albanian Orthodox Diocese of America with the communities in
South Boston and Chicago joining the diocese. Thus in the early 1950s there were two bodies, the
Archdiocese with ten parishes and the Diocese with two parishes, while two more parishes remained
“independent” by affiliating with neither body.

With Bishop Theophan’s falling asleep in 1965 and without any sort of Archdiocesan nomination, the
Rev. Stephen Lasko, the parish priest in Cleveland, proceeded to Albania where he was elevated to the
rank of bishop by the Communist-dominated Synod (soon to be eliminated in 1967). His return left the
two bodies as they were with no canonical recognition for the Archdiocese and full canonical recognition
    for the smaller Albanian Diocese.

With Bishop Stephen’s status unaccepted by any of the Orthodox Bishops in North America, the
Archdiocese petitioned in 1971 to join the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) which had received a
Tomos of Autocephaly from the Church of Russia in 1970. While none of the other Churches recognized
this autocephaly, the OCA was certainly in full communion with the other bishops. By joining the OCA,
the Albanian Archdiocese rejoined the communion of canonical Orthodox Churches.

Shortly after Albanian, Bulgarian, and Romanian church bodies had joined the OCA as constituent
dioceses, the OCA added to its constitution the famous Article XVI which reads:

    Article XVI

    National Groups

When the good of the Church requires that particular national groups receive an
assurance of identity, the Holy Synod may establish Dioceses and/or deaneries
and set standards for their participation in the life of The Orthodox Church in
America by mutual agreement with the group and until such time as the
Diocesan structure of the Church can be organized on an exclusively territorial
basis. If a given group is organized as a Diocese, the bishop of this Diocese is a
member of the Holy Synod and receives an episcopal title defined territorially.

The Statute shall constitute the fundamental law for the existence of all such
groups within The Orthodox Church in America.

As Article XVI promises the eventual liquidation of these three dioceses, it has caused much angst
    among them through the years.

Bishop Stephen fell asleep in 1975 and Bishop Mark likewise in 1982. Despite the influx of tens of
thousands of Orthodox Albanians to North America starting in 1992, both dioceses were largely
administered by a Locum Tenens or a Vicar General until 2002 when both were filled again. The Rev.
Nicholas Liolin was installed as Bishop Nikon in the Albanian Archdiocese and the Rev. Ilia Katre as
Bishop Ilia in the Albanian Diocese. The two worked together and repeatedly concelebrated in a display
of unity especially during the centennial year of 2008.

While Bishop Nikon’s declining health somewhat limited his activities, Bishop Ilia, who had remained in
Albania for six months in 1991-1992 to re-open the Orthodox Seminary in Durres, returned there for
three more years while redesigning their academic program and expanding it to a full four-year course.
Both bishops were later elevated, Nikon to Archbishop and Ilia to Metropolitan. Archbishop Nikon fell
asleep in September of 2019 after a long life of dedicated service to the Lord.

In addition to Metropolitan Ilia’s active role in the resurrection of the Church of Albania, he doubled his
efforts back in North America, ordaining four men for the Diocese and regularly serving the mission
community in Toronto. He also made special trips to celebrate the Divine Liturgy in the Albanian
language to the communities in Montreal, Tampa, Naples, Washington, and Waterbury. During the
COVID pandemic, his churches remained open for all Sundays, festal days, and Holy Week. Metropolitan
Ilia has repeatedly led pilgrimages to the Holy Land where the majority of clergy and pilgrims were of
Albanian origin and where services were conducted at the shrines in the Albanian language, perhaps for
    the first time.

N munges t tij ishin krijuar pes famulli t reja.

Krkess iu prgjigj Patriarku Athenagora, i cili drgoi Peshkopin Marku (Lipa) n vitin 1950 dhe inkorporoi Dioqezn Orthodhokse Shqiptare t Ameriks ku komunitetet n Bostonin e Jugut dhe ikago i bashkohen dioqezs. Kshtu n fillim t viteve 1950 kishte dy trupa kishtare, Kryedioqeza me dhjet famulli dhe Dioqeza me dy famulli, ndrsa mbetn edhe dy famulli t tjera

Me statusin e peshkopit Stefan t papranuar nga asnj prej peshkopve orthodhoks n Amerikn e Veriut, Kryedioqeza bri nj krkes n vitin 1971 pr t'u bashkuar me Kishn Orthodhokse n Amerik (OCA), e cila kishte marr nj Tomos t Autoqefalis nga Kisha e Rusis n vitin 1970.

    Neni XVI

    Grupet Kombtare

Statuti do t prbj ligjin themelor pr ekzistencn e t gjith ktyre grupe brenda Kishs Orthodhokse n Amerik.

Rev. Nicholas Liolin u vendos si Peshkopi Nikon n Kryedioqezn Shqiptare dhe Imzot Ilia Katre si Peshkopi Ilia n Dioqezn Shqiptare. T dy punuan s bashku dhe vazhdimisht u bashkuan n nj ekspozit t unitetit veanrisht gjat 100-vjetorit t 2008-s.

Ndrsa rnia e shndetit t peshkopit Nikon i kufizoi disi aktivitetet e tij, peshkopi Ilia, i cili kishte mbetur n Shqipria pr gjasht muaj n 1991-1992 pr t rihapur Seminarin Orthodhoks n Durrs, u kthye atje pr edhe tre vite t tjera duke ridizajnuar programin e tyre akademik dhe duke e zgjeruar at n nj kurs t plot katrvjear. T dy peshkopt u ngritn m von, Nikoni n Kryepeshkop dhe Ilia n Mitropolitan. Kryepeshkopi Nikon fjeti n shtator 2019 pas nj jete t gjat shrbimi t prkushtuar ndaj Zotit.

Krahas rolit aktiv t Mitropolitit Ilia n ringjalljen e Kishs s Shqipris, ai dyfishoi prpjekjet prsri n Amerikn e Veriut, duke shuguruar katr burra pr dioqezn dhe duke shrbyer rregullisht n mision t komunitetit n Toronto. Ai bri edhe udhtime t veanta pr t kremtuar Liturgjin Hyjnore n gjuhn shqipe pr komunitetet n Montreal, Tampa, Naples, Washington dhe Waterbury. Gjat pandemis COVID, kishat e tij qndruan t hapura pr t gjitha t dielat, ditt e festave dhe Javn e Shenjt. Mitropoliti Ilia ka udhhequr vazhdimisht pelegrinazhet n Tokn e Shenjt ku shumica e klerit dhe pelegrinve ishin me origjin shqiptare dhe ku jan kryer shrbesat n faltoret n gjuhn shqipe, ndoshta pr hera t par.
