MONTREAL (AFP) - A former Serbian policeman wanted in Belgrade on charges of war crimes in Kosovo and seeking political asylum here is to appear before a Canadian immigration court September 17, his lawyer said.
Dejan Demirovic, 28, and another former Serbian policeman, Sasa Cvjetan, are accused of participating in the murder of 19 people in the town of Podujevo in northeastern Kosovo during the NATO (news - web sites) bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999.
Demirovic fled to Canada two years ago and has been living in Ontario.
Cvjetan is currently on trial in Belgrade.
Demirovic "has decided to move to Canada because his parents live here, they have landed immigrant status," his lawyer, Dragi Zekavica, told AFP by telephone.

"It was only after he came here, after he made his application (for refugee status) that the charges were then laid in Serbia" and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested him, said Zekavica.
He said his client spent five months in jail before being freed on bail in May for court appearance in September.
